Jaguars double down on Bobcats

ANKENY — Ankeny Centennial sophomore Jessica Lathrop pitched a complete-game shutout in her varsity debut, helping the Jaguars finish off a CIML Iowa Conference sweep of Marshalltown on Thursday night.

The host Jaguars (14-7, 10-4) won the opener 14-2 in four innings, sparked by a nine-run eruption in the bottom of the third inning. Claire Suarez had a two-run single and Payton Drefke added a two-run single in the big at-bat.

Lauren Gustofson allowed two runs on eight hits in the circle for Centennial. Marshalltown (1-14, 0-14) scored twice in the top of the second to tie the score at 2-all, as three-straight singles by Laney Danielson, Kristin Hayes and Ava Kusserow plated the first run and a double by Sophie Younkin drove in Hayes to tie the game up.

Danielson was thrown out trying to stretch her double into a triple to lead off the fourth inning, and Hayes followed it with a single, but that was the last threat the Bobcats had.

Younkin, Danielson and Hayes each had two of Marshalltown’s eight hits. Ava Augustine and Kusserow had the others.

Mackenzie James went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs to lead the Centennial offense. Avery Mull took the loss in the circle for MHS, allowing 14 runs on 15 hits and two walks.

In the nightcap, Lathrop scattered nine Marshalltown singles over five innings for the complete-game victory, 11-0. She struck out seven and walked only one, preventing the Bobcats from advancing beyond second base.

Younkin, Augustine and Kusserow had two hits apiece, while Gianna Baune, Danielson and Mull each had a single for the Bobcats, who stranded nine runners on base.

Jordyn Kennedy, Lauren Solis and Malin Vallejo each had two of Centennial’s 10 hits off Augustine, who was saddled for nine earned runs on 12 hits and four walks. She struck out one.

Marshalltown is back in action today with a pair of games at the Rose Festival Tournament, facing host West Marshall at 2 p.m. and East Marshall at 4 p.m.

Starting at $4.38/week.
