Mustangs march to state as a team

ELDORA — The East Marshall boys’ cross country team took home all the gold medals from Thursday’s Class 1A state-qualifying meet at Pine Lake Country Club, winning the team competition while crowning senior Joe Terrones as the medalist.

The Mustangs won the 13-team meet and earned state qualification in the process, dominating the meet with just 41 points. North Linn (68) and Valley Lutheran (109) also earned team berths to state, while BCLUW (131) was left outside the top three.

The Comets weren’t shut out from state, however, as senior Cayden McLeland earned his place in Fort Dodge next weekend with a top-10 finish.

Terrones won the meet with a time of 17 minutes, 46.99 seconds, finishing 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up. East Marshall’s Kaleb Grant was next across in fifth place (18:31.73), while McLeland represented BCLUW in sixth place (18:34.06).

Patrick Rayburn of East Marshall earned eighth place in 18:53.31, Brock Curtis came in 11th (19:21.70), and Cale Hungerford collected 16th (19:56.90).

BCLUW’s Cayden White was four spots shy of qualifying for state, finishing 14th in 19:36.36. Lincoln Stover wasn’t far back in 17th for the Comets (20:02.92). Carter Kemp placed 37th (21:09.53).

GMG finished 11th in the final team standings with 278 points, led by Brayton Davis in 29th place (20:53.75). Grady Dieleman was 39th (21:14.38), one spot ahead of North Tama’s lone competitor Case Monat (40th, 21:17.67).

Meskwaki’s two runners finished consecutively, as Tibby Billy was 85th (26:16.11) and Tenoch Snow was 86th (26:16.54).

Kemp, Redhawks advance

ELDORA — BCLUW sophomore Abby Kemp and the North Tama cross country team earned their places at the state meet with runner-up finishes at the Class 1A state-qualifying meet Thursday at Pine Lake Country Club.

Kemp was a distant second place to meet champion Meghan Wheatley of North Linn, who finished in 20 minutes, 26.79 seconds, but was comfortably in front of third-place finisher Brylee Bellis of Wapsie Valley (22:14.66). Kemp clocked in at 21:43.81 to secure her spot at next weekend’s state meet.

North Linn finished in front of the field with 40 points, while North Tama (57) held off Wapsie Valley (62) for the second and final team berth to state. South Hardin (91), BCLUW (115), East Marshall (128) and Waterloo Christian (195) rounded out the final standings.

North Tama’s silver medal was led by Grace Lidgett’s fifth-place finish in 22:37.73. Olivia Ketter (23:25.16) and Jamie Jacobs (23:43.07) finished 10th and 11th, respectively, while Gabby Seda (24:04.48) and Ava Breakenridge (24:22.09) were 17th and 18th.

Kalia Stover missed out on individual advancement by three spots for BCLUW in finishing 13th (23:58.82). Izzy Morris (44th, 28:29.44), Bella Stotts (45th, 28:42.77) and Devin Peterson (48th, 28:56.92) rounded out the Comets’ scoring.

East Marshall was led by Ava Hendricks in 23rd place (25:22.83), while Mallory Ostroski was 29th (26:06.69). Aubrey Lambi (32nd, 26:30.14) and Larkin Fricke (33rd, 26:42.37) finished back-to-back, and Isabelle Hendricks rounded out the team scoring in 40th (27:34.81).

GMG’s duo saw Chloe Dieleman finish in 28th place (25:59.44), while Lilly Bru was 60th (33:20.46).

Meskwaki’s two runners finished consecutively in Sia Bear (42nd, 28:13.26) and Sophie Snow (43rd, 28:15.06).

GC/G-R gets two through

PELLA — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ cross country team just missed out on advancement but the Spartans will still be well represented at next weekend’s state meet in Fort Dodge.

GC/G-R finished eight points out of third place, but two runners earned individual berths with top-15 finishes at Thursday’s Class 2A state-qualifying meet hosted by Pella Christian. Emerson Vokes, a freshman, took third place in a time of 16 minutes, 58.17 seconds, and junior Kaden Lynch claimed seventh in 17:25.83.

Teammate Brennen Sager, a senior, was one spot shy of reaching state in 16th (17:49.17). Tyler Venenga wasn’t far back in 18th (18:24.70). Chris Utterback completed the Spartans’ team scoring in 50th place (19:75.21).

West Marshall was ninth as a team with 266 points, led by sophomore Jack Decker in 44th (19:36.84) and freshman Jake Eirikson in 48th (19:48.00). Dylan Thompson (63rd, 20:43.77), Brevon Gibson (65th, 20:48.93) and Aiden Downs (66th, 20:51.28) rounded out the Trojans’ team scoring.

Danville (61), Pella Christian (73) and Mid-Prairie (81) earned the team berths to state.

One Spartan, one Trojan

PELLA — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck and West Marshall girls’ cross country teams will both be represented in Fort Dodge after one runner from each squad scored a top-15 finish at Thursday’s Class 2A state-qualifying meet hosted by Pella Christian.

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck freshman Grace Storjohann and West Marshall freshman Addie Thompson finished 12th and 13th, respectively, to earn advancement to the 2A state meet next Friday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Storjohann led the Spartans with a time of 21 mintues, 2.46 seconds, while Thompson crossed in 21:02.55 in a photo finish.

GC/G-R came in fifth out of 11 scoring teams with 130 points, while West Marshall was eighth with 196. Mid-Prairie (49), Albia (54) and Pella Christian (84) earned the state team berths.

The Spartans got top-25 finishes from Laney Dole (18th, 21:31.39) and Karlee Lynch (22nd, 22:07.59), while West Marshall was helped along by Emelia Hauser (26th, 29:19.54) and Carli Pfantz (52nd, 24:50.86).
