Comets run circles around A-P
BCLUW blanks Falcons, 12-0 in 3 innings
CONRAD — BCLUW softball was selective with its memory heading into Tuesday’s home game with Aplington-Parkersburg.
The Comets bounced back from an extra-inning loss to South Hardin on Monday to rout the Falcons, 12-0, at Dave Lee Field in Conrad.
“[Monday] was one of the better games we’ve played,” BCLUW coach Megan Yantis said. “And it was disappointing how it ended, but I told the girls, ‘Look at the potential for what we can do,’ and that we needed to start building off that, and I feel like tonight showed that we were going to go that way.”
BCLUW (9-10) poured in 11 runs in the first inning, sending 15 batters to the plate and taking advantage of three walks and two errors in addition to six hits in the inning.
In that first inning, Raegan Crawford and Grace Farnsworth had two runs batted in each and Morgan Bergman, Cameron Bergman, Marissa Schnathorst and Jaelynn Poage all accounted for one RBI apiece.
“Putting the ball in the play is what we needed to do,” Yantis said. “There’s times that we don’t do that against hittable pitchers and I liked our adjustment from last night’s game against South Hardin and a quicker pitcher — we were able to adjust right away from pitch one.”
Farnsworth added a third RBI on her second hit of the night to score pinch hitter Allison Ward for the 12th run to end the game early.
BCLUW also had 10 hits against South Hardin on Monday, starting the week off on the right foot offensively for a Comet attack led by Crawford, a sophomore leading the team with a .391 average coming into Tuesday’s game.
“She’s grown so much from last year to this year,” Yantis said. “If she has a bad game, she’ll stay after and take some extra cuts outside of practice. She’s very disciplined and wants to be better and works at it all the time.”
Sarah Garber was able to provide some relief for primary pitcher Klayre Gallentine on Tuesday, just one of many hats for the Comet sophomore.
“She played third base last night, played second, she’s been an outfielder, she’s just embraced every role that I’ve thrown at her,” Yantis said. “She’s done a great job and we’re probably going to have to use her this weekend.”
No days off for BCLUW this week, back home against Don Bosco on Wednesday, finishing up the Iowa Star South schedule at North Tama on Thursday and competing in the two-day Bobcat Classic in Marshalltown on Friday and Saturday.
BCLUW will play Bondurant-Farrar at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and have a rematch with Marshalltown at 5 p.m.; Saturday’s games include an 11:15 a.m. start against Colfax-Mingo and a 1 p.m. game against 2A No. 4 Lisbon.
“We’re gonna face a lot of different competition this week,” Yantis said. “We’re seeing all different classes and it’s just gonna make us better in the end.”
