SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat matmen send two to Saydel finals

SAYDEL — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team had two finalists and finished ninth out of 18 teams at the Saydel Invitational on Saturday.

Damien Rodriguez (113 pounds) and Johan Gomez (215) both reached the finals of their respective weight classes to lead the Bobcats. MHS had seven medalwinners overall.

Marshalltown totaled 107.5 points to finish just behind Newton (108.50) in the final team standings. Waukee won with 170.5 points, followed by Carlisle (167.5) and Clear Creek-Amana (166).

Rodriguez (8-2) won twice by decision to reach the 113 finals before suffering defeat by technical fall, 15-0, to Class 3A No. 7 Kendall Kurtz of Iowa City High (9-1).

Gomez, who is ranked ninth in 3A by IAwrestle.com, won twice by pinfall to reach the semifinals before scoring an 8-3 victory over 2A No. 8 Cole Binning of Clarke (14-2). Gomez (8-4) advanced to the finals, where he was edged out by 1A No. 5 Eli Green of interstate 35 by a 6-5 decision.

Xayvion Anderson placed fourth at 165, while Lucas Bantz (126) and Nicholas Wise (132) were fifth in their brackets. Carson Wright (157) and Dalton Zednichek (175) each claimed sixth.

Marshalltown girls wrestle to seventh at Marion

MARION — Morgan Million’s fifth-place finish was the top outcome as the Marshalltown girls’ wrestling squad scored seventh out of 23 teams at the Marion Tournament on Saturday.

The Bobcats totaled 174 points in the tournament to finish comfortably in seventh place. Cedar Rapids Prairie won with 366 points, Mount Vernon was second (327.5) and West Liberty was third (277.5).

Million went 2-2 to place fifth in the 135-pound bracket, highlighted by a pair of pins. She beat Cascade’s Grace Knepper by fall in 1:13, and in the fifth-place match Million decked Muscatine’s Mallory Bruhn in 1:28.

Sixth-place finishes went to Velkis Zelaya at 120 and Nintee Tarr at 145. Seventh-place medals were earned by Ava Kusserow (125), Deanna Mancillaz (130) and Meya Roberts (155), while Rayna Bastidas placed eighth at 115.

Mustangs come up short at STC dual tourney

TAMA — The East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki wrestling team finished last out of six teams at the South Tama Duals on Saturday, going 0-5 for the day.

Mustang heavyweight Wyatt Stalzer led the team with four match wins on the day, recording two pins and two wins by decision. Jordan Meling (126), Drew Wheater (190) and

Jon Edel (215) each had three match victories, while Xavier Slifer (132) had two more.

East Marshall was defeated in duals by Pella (63-12), Indepedence (66-15), Des Moines East (42-38), Oskaloosa (43-36) and host South Tama (60-17).

Spartans pull away from South Hardin girls

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team outscored South Hardin by 10 points in the second half to pull away for a 53-42 victory in Friday’s NICL West Division clash.

Carlie Willis scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Spartans (4-1). Lucy Lebo and Ellery Luhring added nine points apiece, while Luhring led the team with 12 rebounds. Laney Dole added seven points and eight boards.

Ayda Eller led South Hardin (2-3) with 16 points.

AGWSR prevents G-R girls from divisional win

ACKLEY — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team suffered its second loss in as many NICL West Division games, falling 42-34 to AGWSR on Friday night.

Lauren Boyer made four 3-pointers and led the Rebels (3-2) with 14 points. Kennedy Brant had seven points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, while Lily Dripps chipped in six points.

Josie Kuper led AGWSR (4-1) with 16 points and 14 boards.

BCLUW girls use balance to beat GMG

GARWIN — Four players scored in double figures as the BCLUW girls’ basketball team beat GMG 53-39 on Friday night.

Klayre Gallentine made three 3-pointers and led BCLUW (4-2) with 12 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Savannah Moeller scored 11 points off the bench, while Sydney Anderson and Grace Farnsworth finished with 10 points apiece. Ten of Farnsworth’s 13 rebounds were on the offensive glass.

Blake Mathern scored a team-leading 10 points off the bench for GMG (4-2). Jocee Mason added nine points, while Adelyn Sienknecht and Reese Dieleman each scored eight points.

Rebels run laps around AGWSR boys

ACKLEY — Austen Mathern led three players in double figures as the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team toppled AGWSR 65-20 on Friday night.

Mathern scored 14 points, Michael Boyd tallied 13 points and Drew Eilers added 12 points as the Rebels rolled to victory. Isaac Clark added nine points and six assists.

Gabe Nederhoff scored a game-high 16 points to pace AGWSR (0-4).

Spartans send South Hardin packing in second half

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center boys’ basketball team overcame a one-point halftime deficit by outscoring South Hardin 26-7 in the third quarter on its way to a 65-52 triumph in Friday’s NICL West Division showdown.

Tate Jirovsky had 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots to lead Grundy Center (3-2). Brayden Wallis added four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points, and Jalen Kirkpatrick pitched in with 10 points.

Traven Wheeler led South Hardin (1-2) with 15 points.

Wolverines win divisional clash with BCLUW boys

GARWIN — Four players scored in double figures as GMG boys basketball logged a 57-35 victory over BCLUW in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division game.

Rider Kupka led GMG (3-2) with 14 points to go with six steals. Grady Dieleman added 13 points, Anthony Waters had 10 points, and Jabari Woodbury totaled 10 points, seven steals, six rebounds and six assists.

No statistics were available for BCLUW (0-4).

Marion marches past South Tama boys

MARION — The South Tama boys’ basketball team was held scoreless in the opening quarter of Friday’s eventual 47-19 loss to Marion in WaMaC Conference play.

Jeramy Dolash had six points and five rebounds to lead South Tama (1-2). Cade Rosenberger, Tommy Tyynismaa and Daniel Wiese added four points apiece.

Eleven different players scored for Marion (2-2), led by Kylar Whitman’s 11 points and 12 rebounds.

STC girls pushed aside by Marion

TAMA — The South Tama girls’ basketball team fell 75-14 to Class 4A No. 11 Marion on Friday night.

Four players scored in double figures for the visiting Wolves (6-0), who led 47-5 at halftime. Madeline Pavelka led Marion with 14 points.

Peyton Van De Walle scored four points off the bench to lead the South Tama girls (0-5). Jezeila Camacho added three points and a team-leading five rebounds.
