SPORTS SHORTS: MCC men secure consecutive wins, top Trojans

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team claimed consecutive wins for the first time this season by holding off NIACC 80-72 on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (4-10) got a game-high 21 points from Angus Ole, who shot 9-for-13 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Joe Scott had a monstrous double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds, and Mekki Sisk finished with 14 points, six steals and three blocked shots. Michael Barell shot 4-for-4 from 3-point range to contribute 12 points off the bench.

MCC led 41-25 at the half and held off NIACC’s comeback attempt.

Wyatt Helming led NIACC (7-6) with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Tiger women taken down by NIACC

MASON CITY — Thirteen different players scored for NIACC in an 81-41 victory over the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team on Wednesday night.

The Trojans (9-4) had just two double-digit scorers, led by Madison Hillman with 13 points and Keeley Steele with 11.

NIACC had 23 turnovers but made up for it by pulling down 19 offensive rebounds. The Trojans outrebounded MCC 60-37 and forced the Tigers (2-10) into 29 turnovers.

Destiny Sao-Martinez made four 3-pointers and led MCC with 13 points. Jalen Shaw chipped in seven points and three steals off the bench, while Tarah Campbell and Jada Walton tallied five points apiece.

Wolverines handle Colo-NESCO in girls’ hoops

COLO — The GMG girls’ basketball team got a balanced scoring effort and finished off Colo-NESCO with ease, beating the Royals 60-37 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.

Four players scored in double figures and accounted for all but six points for GMG (5-2, 3-1). Jocee Mason had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wolverines, and Dylan Mathern had 14 points and eight steals. Makayla Pendleton put up 13 points off the bench, and Reese Dieleman added 12 points.

Gemma Bower led Colo-NESCO (0-6, 0-4) with nine points.

Trojans can’t hang with No. 2 Mount Vernon

TAMA — The South Tama girls’ basketball team remained winless after a 100-15 loss to Class 3A No. 2 Mount Vernon in Tuesday’s WaMaC Conference clash.

The visiting Mustangs (7-0) led 32-4 after the opening quarter and 71-4 at the half. Peyton Simpson poured in six 3-pointers and 23 points to lead Mount Vernon, and Chloe Meester had 20 points.

Jezella Camacho and Sienna DeFoe both scored four points off the bench to lead South Tama (0-6), which got outrebounded 41-4.

Mustangs withstand South Tama’s counter

TAMA — South Tama’s second-half comeback wasn’t enough as Mount Vernon scored a 52-43 WaMaC Conference win in Tuesday’s boys basketball matchup.

Kellen Haverback led Mount Vernon (3-2) with 18 points and Joey Rhomberg added 16.

Tommy Tyynismaa led South Tama (1-3) with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Cade Rosenberger added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Emerson Bridgewater chipped in eight points, six boards and four blocked shots.

GMG boys get stuck in early rut against Royals

COLO — The GMG boys’ basketball team fell into a first-quarter hole it couldn’t escape, succumbing to Colo-NESCO 76-49 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.

The Royals (3-2, 2-2) led 24-5 after the first quarter and cruised to the conference win.

GMG was led by Colin Teske’s 14 points to go with six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. Grady Dieleman added 10 points, Jabari Woodbury and Anthony Waters added eight points apiece, and Rider Kupka chipped in with seven for the Wolverines (3-3, 2-1). Kaleb Gill pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds off the bench.

Mustangs breeze by AGWSR boys

LE GRAND — East Marshall’s fast start paced the way to victory in Tuesday’s NICL West Division boys’ basketball game, beating winless AGWSR 52-31.

The Mustangs (2-3, 1-0) led 16-5 after the opening stanza and added to the advantage with each passing period.

Jackson Bidwell led East Marshall with 13 points and five steals. Cale Hungerford had 12 points, Alex Jacobson added 11 points and Blake Neuroth finished with 10.

Redhawks fall short in Iowa Star showdown

TRAER — The North Tama boys’ basketball team came up on the short side of a back-and-forth battle, falling 69-63 to Collins-Maxwell in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

Tyrus Luker had 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead North Tama (4-2, 4-1), which sustained its first divisional defeat. Jared Dvorak and Chaz Hall had 11 points apiece, and Josh Dostal added nine.

Four players scored in double figures for Collins-Maxwell (3-3, 2-1), led by Josef Dvorak’s 17 points.
