SPORTS SHORTS: Redhawks’ Knaack wins 100th at BGM quad

BROOKLYN — North Tama junior Kolt Knaack won his 100th career match at a BGM quadrangular with the Bears, South Hardin-BCLUW and Belle Plaine on Tuesday at BGM High School.

Knaack won two matches by fall at 144 pounds and received one forfeit.

The Redhawks came up short in each of their three duals.

SH-BCLUW won the area head-to-head matchup, 48-30; North Tama was 5-2 in head-to-head matches with the Storm but surrendered six forfeits. Kane Kucera (138 pounds), Drake Podhajsky (157), Maxon Monat (106), Drayke Dvorak (113) and Knaack were the winners for the Redhawks, all by pinfall.

Knaack and Monat won by fall in a 58-12 dual loss to Belle Plaine. In a 54-18 dual with BGM, Podhajsky and Dvorak won their matches by fall and Knaack received a forfeit.

BGM squeaked past SH-BCLUW, 42-36. The Storm led 36-30 with two weights remaining but two BGM pins put the Bears on top. Beau Towne (150), Wyatt Guiles (157), Sam Garber (165) and Sean May (285) won their matches by fall and Maverick Grafke and Chance Cordes received forfeits.

Belle Plaine was the better team in a 51-27 win over the Storm, winning eight of the 11 head-to-head matchups. Zaden Eggers (132) and Alex Paxson (175) won by fall; Towne was an 11-6 winner by decision and May took a forfeit victory.

Storm girls win two duals at BGM

BROOKLYN — South Hardin-BCLUW girls wrestling defeated BGM and North Tama in duals at Tuesday’s meet held at BGM High School.

The Storm claimed a victory by tiebreaker criteria against North Tama by a 31-30 final score. SH-BCLUW received four forfeit victories for the deciding point. Ceanna White (120), Raegan Crawford (130), Taya Hollingsworth (145) and Cheyenne Simmons (155) all received forfeits in the dual. Leila Wedgwood (125) was the lone head-to-head winner for the Storm with a pinfall victory.

North Tama got pins from Faith Dvorak (135), Addison Hochstetler (140) and Briar Blake (170); Grace Dvorak (110) and Olivia Youngblood (115) won by forfeit.

In a 36-24 win over BGM, Crawford, White and Kailan McEwen (170) won by fall for the Storm. Hollingsworth, Simmons and Jaelynn Poage (135) received forfeits.

Hochstetler and Blake scored pins for the Redhawks in a 30-12 loss to BGM.

Spartan girls slash Comets

CONRAD — Grundy Center girls basketball led from start to finish in a 60-30 win over BCLUW on Tuesday at BCLUW High School.

Carlie Willis led the Spartans with 12 points, Ellery Luhring added 11 points and Maddy Hendershot came off the bench with 10 points.

Grundy Center (5-1) led 31-11 at halftime and was up 50-22 to start the fourth quarter.

Sydney Anderson and Klayre Gallentine scored nine points each for the Comets (4-4), with each making three 3-point baskets. Grace Farnsworth added six points.

West Marshall girls surge past Hawks

JEWELL — West Marshall girls basketball put together a strong second half in a 51-41 win at South Hamilton on Tuesday.

Bella Borgos led the Trojans with 13 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Lily Zahnd posted a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 17 rebounds and Natalie Nichols and Audrey Girard added 10 points each.

South Hamilton led 19-17 at halftime but West Marshall jumped ahead 34-29 after three quarters.

The Trojans moved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Heart of Iowa. West Marshall is at Grundy Center on Thursday.

Tigers outlast Rebel boys in OT

ELDORA — Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys basketball erased a 14-point deficit to start the fourth quarter but South Hardin escaped with a 53-51 overtime victory at South Hardin High School on Tuesday.

Michael Boyd scored 21 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Rebels in both categories. Drew Eilers added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

G-R led 49-47 with 46 seconds left in regulation before South Hardin knotted it back up to send it to overtime.

Lane Luiken led South Hardin with 18 points.

G-R fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the NICL West. The Rebels are at home against Jesup on Friday.

Trojans can’t catch up to South Hamilton

JEWELL — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t make up the difference in a 54-47 loss to South Hamilton in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

Ryland Ubben led South Hamilton with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Reece Ricke finished with 16 points and nine boards.

Caden Pfantz and Andrew Tollefson topped the charts for West Marshall (1-5) with nine points apiece. Cash Johnston contributed eight points, while Owen Siegert had six points, six assists and four steals. Preston Reese finished with six points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

Grundy boys bowling rolls through Benton

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center boys bowling cruised to a 2,728-2,341 victory over Benton at Crystal Bowl in Grundy Center on Monday.

Gabe McMartin rolled a 414 series to lead the Spartans in the individual games. Michael Lang added a 404 series with the high game of 251. Jacob Hoy finished with a 381, Noah Sealman had a 347 and Britt Meyer contributed a 328. The Spartans outscored Benton in the bakers, 854-751.

In the girls’ meet at Benton, the Bobcats won 1,720-1,364. Mo Allen led the girls with a 248 series and Meaghan Martens added a 217.

The Spartans host New Hampton on Thursday.

A-P/GC’s Storjohann wins title at Saydel

SAYDEL — Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center girls wrestling’s Grace Storjohann won the 120-pound bracket at Monday’s Saydel Girls Invitational.

Storjohann won all three matches by fall, including a second period pin of top-seeded Ottumwa’s Gracie Noll in the final. The A-P/GC sophomore is now 12-1 this season.

Kayden Muller went 3-1 to finish as 135-pound runner-up, dropping a 5-0 decision to Carroll’s Averi Burke in the finals.

Zoey Uhlenhopp was fourth at 155 pounds after a 1-2 day on the mat.
