Bobcat girls stifled by rival Ames

AMES — A physical game didn’t do the Marshalltown girls’ basketball team many favors.

The Bobcats couldn’t maintain their composure in a game with few whistles and fell 44-6 to archrival Ames on Tuesday night in Iowa Alliance Conference Northern Division play.

MHS made a 3-pointer, a 2-pointer and a free throw in falling to the Little Cyclones for the fifth straight meeting, plagued on this occasion by 42 turnovers.

Marshalltown (6-14, 0-7) suffered its lowest scoring night in more than two years, when MHS suffered a 59-6 loss at Ankeny Centennial on Feb. 3, 2022. It matched the fewest points the Bobcats have scored since a 59-5 loss to Southeast Polk inside the Roundhouse on Dec. 7, 2018.

“Tough one,” MHS head coach Brian Murphy said. “This game was very reminiscent of our CIML days. It was an incredibly physical game on both sides where the officials were largely letting both teams play.”

There were only 12 fouls called in the contest and six free throws attempted.

Marshalltown’s Kinsley Bowie sank a 3-pointer for the opening bucket, but the Bobcats didn’t score again for more than 11 minutes. Frankie Long’s free throw in the second quarter accounted for the team’s only point of the period, and MHS went scoreless in the third.

Ellie Hughes added a field goal in the fourth, bringing the Bobcats to their final tally.

Long totaled eight rebounds and four blocked shots, Hughes had seven boards, and Jorja Janssen got three blocked shots. Millie Heitmann had six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Ames (12-8, 6-1) was led by Karsyn Pankonen, who had 13 points. Sophia Timmermans made three 3-pointers for nine points.

The Bobcats close their regular-season schedule with Friday’s IAC North home game against Waterloo East.
