SPORTS SHORTS: MCC netters start at Southeastern

WEST BURLINGTON — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team opened the season at the Southeastern Tournament, going 1-3 to begin the year.

“It’s a tough tournament to start out with, but it gives us a measurement of where we are at competitively against tough teams,” said MCC assistant coach Miranda Spencer. “Our focus for our preseason was translating defensive points to offense and having our hitters transitioning for those points. We have great defensive specialists and liberos putting us in positions to reset the play, we just need to work on our hitters being more efficient.”

MCC lost its first three matches before bouncing back to beat John Wood CC in the finale, 25-19, 26-24, 25-15. The Tigers fell to Carl Sandburg College (25-23, 25-12, 25-21), Heartland CC (26-24, 25-22, 25-12) and Spoon River College (25-22, 25-21, 25-21).

The Tigers hit .258 as a team for the weekend, getting a whopping 40 kills from Genesis Melenciano Carela to lead the way. Kaylee LaPlant posted 21 kills, while Yafriel Payano Pichardo and Heidi Pena both racked up 15 kills. Addy Stull totaled 61 assists and Carolina Arcia added 23 more.

Defensively, MCC was led by BCLUW graduate Callie Swanson with 68 digs, while Pena had 43. Kenna Paxson, also a former Comet, added 32 digs. LaPlant led at the net with nine total blocks, Pichardo had seven, while Carela and Stull added six apiece. Carela chalked up a team-high seven aces as well.

The Tigers are back in action Wednesday against NIACC in Mason City, and the MCC Tournament is Friday and Saturday at the Student Activity Center. The tournament begins Friday at 2 p.m.

“We’re bringing in teams from four different stats,” said Spencer. “This will give us another opportunity to see teams outside our region to make us stronger for conference play.

“We’d love to see the community in the stands for our first home match on Friday!”
