MHS netters eliminated by Trojans in three-setter
IOWA CITY — The Marshalltown volleyball team made Iowa City West work for it, but the Trojans were up to the task.
Iowa City West got a big night from one of the state’s top hitters and the Trojans took down the Bobcats in three sets in Thursday’s Class 5A Region 4 semifinal match, winning 25-19, 25-11, 25-21.
Sophomore outside hitter Sophia Austen piled up 11 kills while senior Ava Bruxvoort added nine more, powering the Trojans (13-17) into the regional finals against No. 4 Dowling Catholic (24-9) next Tuesday night in West Des Moines.
Austen ranks fourth in 5A by averaging 3.8 kills per set.
Marshalltown bowed out at 14-23 despite leading early in the first and third sets. The Bobcats jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the opening set before succumbing to a big Trojan rally. Iowa City West eventually pulled ahead 22-13 before finishing off the win.
The Trojans dominated the second set from the beginning, but Marshalltown made its move again to start the third. The Bobcats led 8-3 and eventually 16-11 before an Iowa City West timeout stopped their momentum. The Trojans scored the next six points and never trailed again, finishing off the victory in three sets.
Marshalltown senior outside hitter Kennedy Feldman led her team with seven kills in the finale. She also served 5-for-6 with an ace. Fellow senior Ellie Hughes had five kills and two blocks, while senior middle hitter Olivia Holmgren had two kills and a team-leading three blocks.
Senior middle hitter Madison Rogers had one kill, one block and served 10-for-11 with one ace, while junior Kinsley Bowie contributed two kills. Senior setter Gaby Estabrook was 5-for-5 serving with an ace.
