Spartan girls split BCLUW Early Bird title

CONRAD — Grundy Center girls track and field started the outdoor season with a share of the team title at Monday’s BCLUW Early Bird in Conrad.

The Spartans scored 103 points to tie with South Hardin atop the team standings in the 11-team event. BCLUW was fourth with 79 points, West Marshall and East Marshall tied for fifth with 62 points, Gladbrook-Reinbeck placed eighth with 24 points, GMG tied for ninth with 13 points and North Tama scored nine points.

Grundy Center won five events on Monday — Grace Storjohann in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 25.08 seconds; Ava Heeren in the 100 in 12.75, Allison Koch clearing 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump, the distance medley relay team of Ava Mundt, Karlee Lynch, Maddy Hendershot and Storjohann clocking in at 4:30.29 and the 4×400 relay of Raelyn Steinmeyer, Hendershot, Lynch and Storjohann in 4:15.15. The Spartans added runner-up finishes with Evelyn Geerdes in the 400-meter hurdles, Steinmeyer in the 400 and the sprint medley relay of Heeren, Koch, Lynch and Storjohann.

BCLUW crowned three champs at the home meet — Kalia Stover won the 1,500 in 5:28.09 and Morgan Bergman won the discus at 108 feet for individual golds and Abby Kemp, Raegan Crawford, Chloe Switzer and Stover ran 10:32.32 to win the 4×800.

East Marshall had two champs — Cora Talbert claimed gold for the Mustangs in the 100 hurdles in 16.56 and was the anchor of the winning shuttle hurdle team in 1:16.86, following Makayla Hala, Vaeda Bryan and Marisa Cahalan.

West Marshall’s Addie Thompson ran the 3,000 in 12:10.45 to win for the Trojans.

GMG’s Makayla Pendleton led the Wolverines with a runner-up finish in the discus and G-R’s distance medley relay also earned silver.
