Polley leads after 18
Grundy Center 2nd, Mustangs 4th in debut
WATERLOO — West Marshall junior Hunter Polley had six birdies in a stretch of seven holes to take the lead after Tuesday’s opening round of the Class 2A Iowa High School Boys State Golf Championship at Gates Park Golf Course.
Polley shot 34-35 for a 3-under-par round of 69 to capture a one-stroke lead after the first 18 holes, setting the pace ahead of Waterloo Columbus senior Drew Lindsay (70). Lake Mills senior Austin Stene sets third at 71.
Polley, who placed fourth at last year’s state tournament, bogeyed two of his first five holes after teeing off on No. 10. He followed that stretch by carding three-straight birdies, parred 18, and then birdied holes 1, 2 and 3.
Two more bogeys and another birdie followed over Polley’s final six holes.
Waterloo Columbus carded a 302 on the opening day to lead the team standings, followed by Grundy Center (309) and Aplington-Parkersburg (318). East Marshall and PCM are tied for fourth at 319 in the 12-team tournament.
East Marshall junior Cody Weaver stands as part of a seven-player tie for fifth place individually after opening with a 3-over 75. Grundy Center’s Preston Martens and Judd Jirovsky are a part of that logjam at 75 in leading the Spartans in their pursuit of their fifth state championship.
Jaxon Kiewiet shot a 79 and Eli Wegmann added an 80 to Grundy Center’s team tally. Alex Kiewiet (81) and Jalen Kirkpatrick (90) also competed for the Spartans.
East Marshall is in position to compete in its first-ever team appearance at state. The Mustangs were led on the first day by brothers Cody and Rylan Weaver, who shot 75 and 79, respectively. Jackson Bidwell contributed an 81, and Wyatt Stalzer shot 84 to round out East Marshall’s scoring. Austin Crandon (98) and Gage Searle (103) also participated for the Mustangs.
Tee times commence at 9 a.m. Wednesday for the final 18 holes at Gates Park.
