DES MOINES — The history-breaking quartet of Judd Jirovsky, Brody Zinkula, Brayden Wallis and Brayden Davie made history once again.

En route to qualifying for the Class 2A 4×400-meter relay finals, the Spartans shattered their school record set only a month ago at the Drake Relays with a time of 3 minutes, 19.79 seconds.

Being the top-seeded team coming into the prelims proved telling of the dominance shown. Leading the race from gun to tape, the group was completely uncontested.

“We knew we could go into that race and do something very special, what we do tomorrow is just going to add to this special stuff we’re doing,” Zinkula said.

Coming from the second heat, the Spartans watched on to see if they would hold their top spot after the final heat ran. Moments after Okoboji and Denver finished, Wallis and Zinkula exclaimed “we’re safe!”

With high expectations very high for the Spartans, an eighth-place finish in the distance medley relay brought much disappointment. The medley was anchored by state 3,200-meter champion Emerson Vokes, but Grundy finished in a time of 3:35.65.

Grundy Center saw some issues in the 4×100 as well, only managing 15th place, all while running a season’s best time of 43.78 and breaking their school record.

Jirovsky spoke of his frustration but remained appreciative of his teammates.

“Yeah, it’s great to be out here with my guys and yeah, we didn’t get it done, but still did a great job running,” he said.

Seeing a bit more success was the 4×200 relay, managing a podium appearance with 1:28.05 for third place. Devin Hinders, Grant Newton, Zinkula and Jirovsky, expected more from themselves but accepted their bronze medals

Tiernan Vokes and Pete Lebo came out with very similar results in the 110 high hurdles. Both in different heats, Vokes took home 17th place to Lebo’s 19th.

Tiernan Vokes also took on the long hurdles, finishing 18th with a time of 57.2 in the 400-meter lows.

Starting at $4.38/week.
