SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans, Trojans compete in Class 2A girls state golf
BOONE — The Grundy Center girls’ golf team sets in third place while West Marshall is tied for eighth after Thursday’s opening round of play in the Class 2A girls’ state golf tournament at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.
Oelwein leads the 10-team field with a 325, followed by New Hampton (337), Grundy Center (348) and Roland-Story (349). West Marshall and Central Lyon (394) are tied at eighth, one shot ahead of Shenandoah (395).
Grundy Center is led by Leah Larson’s opening 82, which is tied for ninth, while Avery Knutsen shot 83 to tie for 11th. Holly Lubbert (89) and Kahlynn Draper (94) rounded out the Spartans’ scoring.
Natalie Nichols shot a 94 to lead West Marshall. Rachel Randall (98), Riley Randall (101) and Jillian Karsjen (101) completed the Trojans’ team scoring.
Oelwein’s Grace Lewis and Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Chloe Bolte are tied for the lead after shooting even-par 72.
STC’s Dolezal tied for 19th after opening round of 3A
SOLON — South Tama’s Aubrey Dolezal shot an even-par 36 on the front nine on her way to an opening round of 80 at the Class 3A girls’ state golf tournament on Thursday at Saddleback Ridge Golf Course.
Dolezal had three birdies, three pars and three bogeys on the front nine, but couldn’t match her success on the back side. She’s tied for 19th place in the 3A standings going into Friday’s final round. Elin Mueller of Dubuque Wahlert and Ella Lohrbach of Gilbert share the lead at 3-under-par 69.
Roughriders eliminate Bobcat girls soccer, 4-2
DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team got within a goal of Des Moines Roosevelt before the Roughriders tacked on an insurance goal for a 4-2 victory over the Bobcats in Wednesday’s Class 3A Region 3 semifinal match.
Roosevelt (11-4-1) won for the eighth time in its last nine games by getting out to a 3-1 halftime lead. The Roughriders led 3-0 after consecutive goals by Ziva Spellman, but a quick answer from Marshalltown’s Yuri Ramirez got the Bobcats (11-4-3) on the board just before halftime. Spellman’s second goal came at the 34:53 mark, and the answer from Ramirez was just 20 seconds later.
Gissel Hernandez Ibarra converted a free kick with 10:09 left in the match to bring the Bobcats within one, 3-2, but Spellman scored her third goal with 2:23 remaining to seal the victory.
Sophia Valdez Chavez had 10 saves in net for Marshalltown, while Ada Bogdanski made just two stops for the Roughriders.
Roosevelt advances to play at No. 3 Ankeny Centennial (13-3-2) in Friday’s regional finals.
