FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown baseball team continued its quest for a conference win on Wednesday at Fort Dodge, but the Dodgers have a chase of their own to worry about.

The Bobcats (6-19) fell twice by the score of 11-1 in a pair of five-inning games Wednesday at Rogers Sports Complex, dropping to 0-10 in Iowa Alliance Conference North Division play this season.

Marshalltown dove into its bullpen to face a Fort Dodge team still contending for the conference crown. The Dodgers (21-10, 9-3) visit Ames (19-10, 10-0) on Monday in hopes of catching the Little Cyclones in the North Division standings, which left the Bobcats standing in their path of pursuit.

Fort Dodge scored early and often in the first game of Wednesday’s twinbill, and freshman pitcher Cael Adams cruised to the victory. Adams allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six for the complete-game triumph.

Treyton Gilliland surrendered 10 runs on seven hits, three walks, three hit batsmen and one strikeout over two innings for the loss. Wyatt Peters gave up one run over his two innings, walking one and striking out one.

The Bobcats got two of their four hits in the top of the fourth inning to score their lone run. Zander Stupp hit a one-out double and Garrett Thede walked before Madden Martin singled in a run. Adams escaped with no further damage, and MHS left two more runners stranded in the fifth to end the game.

Sam Greazel and Luke Stalzer added hits for MHS.

Fort Dodge sophomore Mason Frevert made his season pitching debut in the nightcap and handcuffed the ‘Cats to the tune of one run on three hits, four walks, a hit batter and eight strikeouts over the five-inning performance.

Marshalltown freshman Bennett Ricken made his first pitching appearance of the season as well but was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs — two earned — on one hit and three walks in the first inning.

Eight of Fort Dodge’s 11 runs in the second game were unearned to MHS pitchers.

The Bobcats again trailed 11-0 before scoring their only run, fighting to prolong the game in the top of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Cooper McLeod walked before Greazel doubled, and Stupp was hit by a pitch with one out to load the bases. Thede grounded out to short to drive in McLeod, but Fervert held the Bobcats there to end the game.

Larrs Schoenfelder and Aiden Holmgren both singled to account for the other two hits Marshalltown got against Fervert.

Royce Pederson drove in four runs in both games of the doubleheader for Fort Dodge, which beat the Bobcats for the 20th time in their last 21 meetings.

“Defensively we did well both games,” said MHS head coach Colton Hanke. “Guys made plays and helped us compete. However, the theme of free passes continued today and we dug ourselves into holes early.”

Marshalltown remains on the road Friday for a divisional doubleheader at Waterloo East.

Starting at $4.38/week.
