SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs make quick work of Falcons

PARKERSBURG — Peyton Grabenbauer twirled a one-hitter and the Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall softball team slammed Aplington-Parkersburg 18-0 on Wednesday night in cross-NICL action.

The Mustangs (15-7) rapped out 15 hits while holding the host Falcons (3-15) to just one. Avery Freund hit a leadoff single in the second inning, but Grabenbauer and her defense didn’t wilt. Freund was A-P’s only baserunner all game, and she never advanced past first.

East Marshall scored 12 runs in the first half inning to set the stage for the shellacking. The Mustangs sent 18 batters to the plate, highlighted by Libby Atcher’s RBI double her first time through and a two-run double the second time around.

Bailey Grant added a pair of two-run doubles in the game and finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Her courtesy runner Addy Denham scored three times. Atcher went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Miyah Grabenbauer was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Makayla Hala also went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBIs.

Blue Devils best West Marshall softball, 2-1

NORWALK — Martensdale-St. Marys beat the West Marshall softball team in walkoff fashion, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Trojans 2-1 on Tuesday night at Fareway Fields.

Jillian Karsjen scored West Marshall’s only run in the top of the first inning. She finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Lily Zahnd had the team’s only other hit. Amelia Ranson drove in Karsjen for the Trojans’ lone tally.

Aubree Greenwood pitched all 6 1/3 innings for West Marshall, sustaining the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and four walks. She struck out three.

Shelby Gideon had the only hit — a double — for the Blue Devils (12-9). Abigail Hughes walked two, hit a batter and struck out six in the win.

Spartan softball outlasts Hudson, 4-3

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center softball team logged its fifth-straight win, holding off Hudson 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Maddy Hendershot and Evelyn Geerdes had two hits apiece to pace the Spartans (15-6), who scored twice in the fourth inning to take their 4-3 lead.

Macey Kiewiet and Kyndra Dieken both had RBI singles, as Hendershot scored twice, Geerdes once, and Allison Koch once.

Kiewiet pitched six innings for the win, allowing three runs on four hits and eight walks while striking out nine. Hendershot allowed no hits in the top of the seventh but walked three and struck out one for the save.

North Tama falls to Warriors in non-conference play

VICTOR — The North Tama softball team suffered its seventh consecutive loss, falling 7-1 to HLV-TC on Tuesday night.

The host Warriors (12-5) led 2-1 after four innings before scoring five unanswered runs in their last two at-bats.

Gabriella Seda drove in Harper Rausch, who had singled, as North Tama’s only run. Faith Dvorak and Addison Hochstetler had the only other hits for the Redhawks (3-11).

Hochstetler took the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits and two walks, striking out one.

Comets withstand challenge from Wolverines

CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team had to rally past GMG for a 4-3 victory in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

The visiting Wolverines (8-8, 6-7) scored twice in the top of the first inning and once more in the seventh, but BCLUW (15-2, 11-2) did its damage in between with two runs in the third and two more in the fifth.

GMG freshman Riah Boege hit a solo home run for one of her team’s two hits. Addison Elmore singled and scored, and Skyler Murty walked and scored for the Wolverines.

Boege allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out nine in a losing cause. BCLUW freshman Eden Ladehoff racked up 19 strikeouts over seven innings, getting two ground-ball outs. She allowed three hits and walked three.

Ladehoff also led the Comets with a 3-for-3 plate performance that included two doubles and two RBIs. Her courtesy runner Ceanna White scored twice. Klayre Gallentine was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Grace Farnsworth and Savannah Moeller added singles, while Raegan Crawford drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

DeSotels help West Marshall punish PCM

STATE CENTER — West Marshall senior Noah DeSotel pitched a two-hit shutout and the Trojans trampled PCM 12-0 in five innings of Heart of Iowa Conference baseball here Tuesday night.

DeSotel walked two and struck out four in the win for West Marshall (15-7, 11-3). The Trojan offense backed him with 10 hits, including a two-run home run from Beckham DeSotel.

Dawson Bear went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, while DJ Ridout was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Evan Siegert singled and scored three times, while leadoff batter AJ Dee was 1-for-2 with two hit-by-pitches, an RBI and a run scored.

Kaleb DeVries doubled and Izaac Bagby hit a single for PCM (7-9, 6-7).

Grundy Center overcomes upstart Pirates

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center baseball team rallied past Hudson’s fast start for a 15-4, five-inning victory over the winless Pirates on Tuesday night.

Hudson (0-18) scored four times in the top of the first inning, but the host Spartans tallied the next 15 runs for the cross-NICL victory.

Judd Jirovsky went 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs, while Pete Lebo was 3-for-4 with a triple, a run and two RBIs. Ryker Thoren had two hits and drove in three, while Brody Zinkula was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Brayden Davie and Ethan Meester both scored three times.

Hayden Geerdes earned the pitching win in relief of Meester, who allowed one hit but walked four in the first inning. Geerdes allowed no runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three.

Mustangs make it five-straight, beat BCLUW

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team racked up its fifth-straight win with a 13-3, six-inning victory over BCLUW on Tuesday night.

BCLUW (8-5) scored twice in the top of the second to take the momentary lead, but East Marshall (9-10) answered with five runs in the home half and three more in the third.

Jackson Busch went 2-for-3 with a double an RBI and a run scored to lead the Mustangs, who took advantage of nine walks and three hit batsmen issued by BCLUW pitching.

Eli Burns was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, while Jackson Bidwell was 1-for-1 with three walks and three runs scored.

Nathan Frye pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight. Tate Bjelland allowed a hit and two walks before procuring the final out.

Ryan Busch, Kevin Hill and Owen Myers had two hit apiece to lead BCLUW. Hill doubled and drove in a run while Myers scored twice. Will Feldpausch singled home a run as well.
