SPORTS SHORTS: Panthers clip Creighton for first win, 51-50
OMAHA, Neb. — The Northern Iowa women’s basketball team outscored Creighton 29-18 in the second half to score its first win of the season, 51-50, on Thursday night at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Panthers (1-3) picked up their first win by rallying from a 32-22 halftime deficit.
Ryley Goebel led UNI with 19 points to go with eight rebounds, and Bri Robinson added 10 points and six boards for the Panthers. Elise Jaeger had a team-leading 13 rebounds as UNI managed to overcome 19 turnovers and 3-for-19 shooting (15.8 percent) from 3-point range.
Elizabeth Gentry scored 10 points to lead Creighton (1-3) in the loss. The Lady Jays shot 4-of-28 (14.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Iowa’s Ferrari named B1G Wrestler of the Week
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa redshirt freshman Angelo Ferrari has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Thursday.
The Melissa, Texas, native earned the honor after going 4-0 at the National Duals Invitational at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Ferrari recorded wins against No. 4 Zack Ryder (Oklahoma State), No. 7 Dylan Fishback (Ohio State), No. 8 Aeoden Sinclair (Missouri) and No. 26 Chris Moore (Illinois).
Ferrari is the first Hawkeye to earn Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors this season. No. 3 Iowa returns to action Friday against No. 19 Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Brahmer one of eight semifinalists for Mackey Award
AMES — Iowa State tight end Benjamin Brahmer has been named a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, given annually to college football’s outstanding tight end. The eight Mackey Award semifinalists include four Big 12 tight ends.
Brahmer, a junior out of Pierce, Neb., is having a career year as the Cyclones’ leading pass catcher. With two games left in the regular season, Brahmer has 33 receptions for 388 yards and a team-best five touchdown receptions.
Brahmer has three games this season with at least five receptions, including a five catch, 75-yard performance against nationally-ranked BYU. He had a season-high seven receptions and scored two touchdowns in a win against South Dakota.
The last time a tight end led ISU in receptions was Collin Franklin in 2010 (54).
Hawkeyes’ Jones named Outland Trophy semifinalist
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior center Logan Jones is one of seven semifinalists for the 2025 Outland Trophy. The announcement was made Wednesday by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee. The Outland Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s best interior lineman on offense or defense.
Joining Jones as semifinalists are offensive linemen Spencer Fano (Utah), Iapani Laloulu (Oregon), Kadyn Proctor (Alabama) and Carter Smith (Indiana), and defensive tackles Kayden McDonald (Ohio State) and Landon Robinson (Navy).
Jones anchors Iowa’s offensive line, which is a Joe Moore Award semifinalist. The native of Council Bluffs has started 48 career games and has served as a game captain each week this season. He is the top-rated center in the country by Pro Football Focus and has not been flagged for an offensive holding penalty in 2025. Jones was the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week on the weekend of Oct. 25 following Iowa’s 41-3 convincing victory over Minnesota.
The semifinalists will be pared to three finalists on Nov. 25.
