LE GRAND — The University of Iowa is calling upon some of the state’s best to help the program move forward in the Big Ten Conference.
East Marshall senior Cody Weaver answered.
Weaver signed his National Letter of Intent to play golf for the Hawkeyes, putting pen to paper on National Signing Day on Nov. 12. Weaver made his verbal commitment to the University of Iowa two months earlier, just after winning his second-straight Iowa Junior Open Championship.
Weaver is a part of the Hawkeyes’ three-man recruiting class as the program looks to graduate just one senior from its current roster.
“We are happy to welcome three top players and strong competitors to the team,” said Iowa head coach Tyler Stith. “This class will immediately make the team better because of their talent and character.”
Weaver is joined by Class 4A fall state golf champion Andrew Johannsen of Johnston, as well as Joey Scott of Lemont, Ill., a two-time all-state performer.
Weaver is a three-time all-state golfer for East Marshall with his senior season still in front of him. Weaver has finished fifth, third and sixth in consecutive state tournaments for the Mustangs, who last spring qualified for state as a team for the first time in program history.
“The incredible culture at the University of Iowa and of Iowa City was undeniable,” said Weaver. “The coaches and players were all extremely welcoming and made me excited to be a Hawkeye. “I felt the University of Iowa was able to give me the best opportunity to grow as both a student and player.”
Weaver followed up the spring season with summer that included his second consecutive Iowa Junior Open title at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside.
“Cody had an outstanding summer and demonstrated he can win at the highest level of junior golf,” said Stith. “Cody’s humble, intelligent and has a very good golf swing. He will be ready to compete and contribute to the team next fall.”
Weaver is also a three-time football letterwinner and a two-time basketball letterwinner at East Marshall, where he is a member of the National Honor Society and a two-time academic all-conference golfer.
