AMES — The No. 8 Iowa State men’s basketball team put together one of its most complete performances of the season Thursday night, cruising to a 97-67 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes at Hilton Coliseum.
From the opening tip, the Cyclones (19-2, 6-2) brought intensity on both ends. After Colorado’s Sebastian Rancik opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Iowa State erupted with a 30-4 run to seize control early and never looked back. By halftime, ISU led 52-29, and the home crowd sensed a blowout was in the cards well before the final buzzer.
Head coach T.J. Otzelberger praised his team’s effort in the locker room after the game.
“We talked all week about the importance of starting fast and playing with confidence on our home court,” Otzelberger said. “Tonight, guys responded. We moved the ball, shared it, and everyone who stepped on the court contributed.”
The offensive balance was evident as six Cyclones scored in double figures. Freshman guard Jamarion Batemon led the way off the bench with 17 points, making 4 of 6 3-pointers, while Milan Momcilovic added 16 points, including multiple long-range shots that kept the Buffaloes on their heels.
Senior guard Tamin Lipsey finished with 14 points and five assists, and forward Joshua Jefferson chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Bench standout Dominykas Pleta tied a career-high with 12 points on perfect shooting, reflecting the depth that has become a trademark of this Cyclone squad.
“I think what this team has learned — especially the young guys — is that when everyone embraces their role, good things happen,” Batemon said in the post-game interview. “We talk about playing for each other, and tonight that really showed on the scoreboard.”
Colorado (12-9, 2-6), which has now lost six straight Big 12 games, countered with 24 points from freshman Isaiah Johnson, but the Buffaloes could not slow Iowa State’s offensive rhythm. The Cyclones shot over 60% from the field, including hot perimeter shooting early that set the tone for the contest.
“Iowa State executed at a high level,” Colorado head coach Tad Boyle said. “We were outworked in key moments, and that’s something we have to address. We gave up too many easy looks early, and against a team like this, that’s going to be costly.”
With the win, the Cyclones remain unbeaten at Hilton Coliseum this season and look to carry their momentum into Sunday’s road game at Kansas State. Colorado, meanwhile, heads back to Boulder with a long list of adjustments to make.
