SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys get back on track, beat Trojans

WATERLOO — The Marshalltown boys’ basketball team bounced back from a frustrating loss at Fort Dodge earlier in the week by beating Waterloo East 62-47 on Friday night in Iowa Alliance Conference play.
Kyle Smith made six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points, Drake Gersema got 18 points, eight assists and five steals, and Jacob Hayes scored half of his 16 points at the free-throw line.
Jamison Niehouse pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds to go with four points, and Damian Segovia added a bucket for the Bobcats (10-6, 5-2), who swept the Trojans in conference play.
Gianni Gary led Waterloo East (6-8, 3-3) with 12 pionts and Deion Bynum added three 3-pointers and 11 points off the bench. Davieon VanArsdale added nine points for the host Trojans, who climbed to within five points in the fourth quarter before a pair of technical fouls foiled their comeback.
Shorthanded MHS girls fight to the finish at East
WATERLOO — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team continued to play shorthanded but put up a valiant effort in a 56-48 loss at Waterloo East in Friday’s Iowa Alliance Conference clash.
Playing without starting point guard Amairra Johnson or reserve shooting guard Morgan Hilderbrand, the Bobcats (10-7, 4-3) battled back from as much as a 17-point deficit to make it a two-point game during the fourth quarter.
Kinsley Bowie poured in a team-leading 14 points to go with three steals for MHS, while Millie Heitmann finished with 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and six steals. Kendall Brummel made three 3-pointers for nine points, Frankie Long had eight points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Jorja Janssen added seven points.
Alayna Henderson led Waterloo East (10-6, 4-2) with 14 points, Siyanna Cody had 13 and Graysyn Downing added 12.
Trojan matmen narrowly miss non-conference sweep
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team split a pair of non-conference duals at home on Thursday night, falling to Humboldt but beating Gilbert.
The Trojans fell on tiebreaker criteria to Humboldt after the two teams settled in a 37-all tie. The Wildcats won more six-point matches than West Marshall, 5-4, to claim the match.
West Marshall got pins from Landyn Gutierrez (113 pounds), Urijah Courter (120), Riley Hanford (138) and Kinnick Geers (150). Garrett Bear (106) and Jon Gonzalez (126) both registered technical falls, and Jacob Dare (285) won by decision.
The Trojans toppled Gilbert 53-22, cashing in on eight pins and another technical fall. Bear, Courter, Gonzalez, Hanford, Ben Buck (144), Geers, Damian Ficken (190) and Dalton Hellyer (215) pinned their Tiger counterparts, and Gutierrez added a technical fall.
Wolverines overcome free throw woes for win
GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team fought off Tripoli for a 37-32 victory in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference cross-division contest.
The Wolverines (8-8) shot just 9-of-25 at the free-throw line but still sent the visiting Panthers (7-10) away empty-handed.
Macie Sanders and Taelyn Sash both scored nine points to lead GMG, while Skyler Murty had six points and three assists. Makayla Pendleton pitched in with five points, Addison Elmore had four points, Arianna Pierce had two points and a team-leading six rebounds, and Natalie Upah added a bucket.
