Bobcat boys take second at Alliance
OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team came away with second place at the Iowa Alliance Conference Tournament on Saturday at Ottumwa High School, piling up 176.5 points.
Fort Dodge, ranked seventh in Class 2A by IAwrestle, won the team title with 199 points. Ottumwa (160), Mason City (140), Waterloo East (130.5) and Ames (125.5) rounded out the top-six in the 10-team tournament.
The Bobcats sent seven wrestlers to their weight class finals but lost each title bout. Fort Dodge went 5-0 in the finals, winning both head-to-head matches with Marshalltown.
Scoring runner-up honors for the Bobcats were Nicholas Million (113 pounds), Israel Garcia (126), Derek Rivera Acosta (132), Nicholas Wise (144), Colby Cross (150), Carson Wright (165) and John Schoenfelder (215).
Million (22-8) went 1-1 on the day with a pin before losing by technical fall to sixth-ranked Damien Yeoman of Fort Dodge (24-10) in the finals. Garcia (16-16) got a pair of decisions to reach the finals before a 14-2 loss to DeForrest Snow of Mason City (26-5). Acosta (9-10) posted two pins to reach the 132 finale before losing by technical fall to Mason City’s Isaac McCleish (24-5).
Wise (30-1) scored a pin and a technical fall before sustaining his first loss of the season. Wise, ranked second, was edged out by No. 3 Jaimon Mogard of Ames (36-3) in the finals, 7-4.
Cross (18-10) recorded a pin and a major decision to get to the 150 finals before a loss by technical fall to No. 3 Braxton Winkey of Ames (34-3). Wright (19-9) won by decision in the semifinals before a loss by technical fall to No. 9 Rylee Brown of Fort Dodge. Schoenfelder (16-13) notched a pin and a technical fall before getting pinned by Mason City’s Joseph Hauser (32-4) in the finals.
Kieron Sharp (5-8) went 3-1 on the day to claim third place at 190, while Jamis Piscitelli (10-19) was 2-2 on his way to fourth at 106. Yandel Manning (9-11) also went 2-2 at 138 to finish fourth, while Anthony Chavez (17-18) placed fifth with a 2-2 showing at 157.
The Bobcats return to the mats on Saturday, Feb. 7, with the Cadet Duals hosted by Iowa Falls-Alden. Marshalltown hosts its 3A district meet on Feb. 14 at the Roundhouse.
