MHS girls blast North, 59-18

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE - Marshalltown’s Keira Halsted (12) tries to dribble past Des Moines North defender Mwasite Wilondja (10) during the first half of Monday’s Iowa Alliance Conference basketball game at the Roundhouse.

Marshalltown girls’ basketball coach Brian Murphy isn’t exactly sure when the last team in the program finished above .500, but he knows when the most recent one did.

The Bobcats scored their third-straight win to guarantee a winning season by beating Des Moines North 59-18 on Monday night at the Roundhouse.

Marshalltown (13-9) dives into postseason play on Wednesday night with another home game against a Des Moines Lincoln team it beat twice during the regular season.

But for the first time since December, the Bobcats are as healthy as can be.

“It feels like a ‘finally,'” said Murphy. “It’s been a weird combination of big things and a lot of small bumps and bruises that just kind of add up. It’s a really fun group to coach, period, and it’s even more fun when they’re all on the floor.”

The Bobcats buried Des Moines North (3-18) under a 27-2 first-quarter advantage and got plenty of playing time spread around the roster. Ten different players scored for Marshalltown, led by Amairra Johnson with 13 points, Millie Heitmann with 11 and Jorja Janssen with 10.

Morgan Hilderbrand added eight points, Kinsley Bowie got six points, and the Bobcats breezed past the Polar Bears.

Heitmann had a team-high six rebounds, Frankie Long had five boards, while Janssen tallied six steals and five assists in the blowout win.
