Smith hits 1K as Bobcats get revenge on DM North

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE - Marshalltown senior Kyle Smith (10) shoots over Des Moines North defender Wisha Etha (15) during the first half of Monday’s Iowa Alliance Conference basketball game at the Roundhouse. Smith scored a game-high 23 points to get him to exactly 1,000 for his career, leading the Bobcats to a 64-33 win.

Kyle Smith needed 23 points.

Kyle Smith got 23 points.

The Marshalltown senior guard, who earlier this season became the school’s all-time leading 3-point shooter, reached 1,000 points for his career — exactly — during the Bobcats’ 64-33 romp over Des Moines North on Monday night at the Roundhouse.

Smith scored a game-high 23 points, finishing off a 16-point third quarter with a contested reverse layup that got him to 1,000 for his career.

And it came as part of a win, which meant as much to Smith as anything.

“It meant a lot,” Smith said of the milestone moment as well as the win. “We knew that we didn’t play very good the first time we played at North, so we knew the second time we had them. We knew we could get them for sure and that’s what we did.

“Everybody did a great job executing, going out there and playing their hardest and I’m just super-proud of them for that.”

Smith also had a team-leading nine rebounds to help the Bobcats (14-7) flip the script on a 59-54 loss at Des Moines North just more than a month ago.

Drake Gersema added 13 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds, Jacob Hayes had 13 points and eight boards, and Damian Segovia got eight points and three assists in what was nearly a wire-to-wire win for Marshalltown.

The Polar Bears (6-14) scored the first bucket of the game, but MHS responded with a 9-0 run that put the Bobcats in front for good. Smith opened the Marshalltown scoring with a 3-pointer, of course, and the rest was history.

“It’s awesome, obviously,” MHS head coach Michael Appel said of the accomplishment. “Just proud of Kyle and all the hard work he’s put into this game. He loves it a lot, very passionate about it. I haven’t coached a guy like that to that level. He loves to do it every single day, wants to continue to get better.”

Smith shot 5-of-8 from 3-point range in the win, helping the Bobcats usher in the postseason. Marshalltown will host Iowa City High in the first round of Class 4A Substate 4 action on Monday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Roundhouse. Top-ranked Cedar Falls awaits the winner on Friday, Feb. 27.

“Just to get to be back in here one more time, it means a lot,” Smith said. “It’ll be good to play in here one more time, I’m looking forward to it. And hopefully we make a deep run in the playoffs.”
