Lincoln capitalizes on more chances than Marshalltown baseball
Railsplitters sweep late-night doubleheader over Bobcats
The Marshalltown baseball team produced 11 runs in a home doubleheader against Des Moines Lincoln on Monday night, but the Bobcats came up emtpy in the win column.
The visiting Railsplitters hammered out 23 hits in a twinbill sweep of the Bobcats, prevailing 7-3 and 17-8 in a marathon finale that ended just before 11:30 p.m. at the MHS diamond.
Marshalltown (4-11) saw its losing skid dip to nine games despite a productive day at the plate. MHS hadn’t scored eight runs in a game since its last win — an 11-4 triumph at home over Waterloo East on May 28 — but it wasn’t enough for the Bobcats on this night.
Ethan Garcia-Guillen hit a three-run home run in the first game and had a double in the nightcap, accounting for two of the Railsplitters’ 10 extra-base hits in the sweep. Lincoln’s timely hitting in the opener carried over into the second game, and the Rails (6-7) beat the Bobcats for the 12th time in their last 14 meetings.
Marshalltown led 2-1 before Garcia-Guillen’s three-run homer handed the Railsplitters the lead for good in Game 1. The Bobcats went in front with the bunt game in the bottom of the second inning, following Quinn McLeod’s leadoff double with back-to-back bunts by Larrs Schoenfelder and Garrett Thede.
McLeod scored when Schoenfelder’s bunt was misplayed, and Schoenfelder later scored on Kinnick Niedermann’s sacrifice fly.
The Bobcats trailed 6-2 when they scored again in the fourth. Thede reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Niedermann’s two-out single to right, chasing Lincoln starting pitcher Jay Wright from the mound.
James Miron greeted reliever Alexander Martinez with a single, but two runners were left stranded as the comeback attempt came up short.
Niedermann was 2-for-2 to lead MHS offensively. Starting pitcher Aiden Holmgren took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in two innings, striking out two. Schoenfelder and Luke Stalzer combined on three innings of nearly scoreless relief, striking out two apiece, but the Bobcat offense couldn’t rally.
In the nightcap, the two teams combined to issue 28 walks and hit batsmen in a 17-8 Lincoln win that needed more than three hours to complete.
Six Marshalltown pitchers threw 100 of 185 pitches for balls, while Lincoln tossed 76 balls against 72 strikes.
MHS made a lot of its 12 free passes, but Lincoln did more with its 16 total walks. The Railsplitters had 11 hits to the Bobcats’ seven, but both teams stranded at least 10 runners on base.
Miron led the Bobcats by driving in three runs, getting a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single. Schoenfelder was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs scored, while Madden Martin doubled and scored twice. Jalen Logsdon, Holmgren and Niedermann each added a single, and Niedermann drove in a run with his hit.
Dane Hoogensen took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs — two earned — on three hits and four walks as the first of six pitchers. Schoenfelder pitched two scoreless frames of relief, striking out three.
The Bobcats hit the road for Alliance doubleheaders Wednesday at Ottumwa and Thursday at Mason City before returning home for five games next week.
