MFD responds to structure fire Saturday night

A pellet grill helped cause a structure fire on the 400 block of Swayze St late Saturday night, according to a press release from Marshalltown Fire Department chief David Rierson.
When MFD, Marshalltown Police and Unity Point EMS arrived at the fire site after a 10:52 call, they saw smoke coming from the garage of a single-story residence. The fire was contained to the garage attached to the house, and all the occupants had evacuated safely by the time emergency responders made it to the scene. No injuries were reported from the incident.
According to Rierson, the homeowner used a pellet grill earlier in the evening and thought he had allowed it enough time to cool before putting it back into the garage. A passerby saw smoke and notified the homeowner. The release noted that total damages for the fire were estimated at $5,000.
