Victim suffers ‘extensive burns’ after Saturday morning garage fire

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a structure fire at around 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, and while it was quickly contained, one victim suffered extensive burns requiring further treatment.

According to a press release from the MFD, firefighters found a two-car detached garage with a working fire upon their arrival at 107 E. North St., with no other structures exposed to fire. Fire crews quickly brought the fire under control without incident, and they were at the scene for approximately 90 minutes.

When police arrived, they encountered an occupant of the property attempting to rescue some

property from the burning structure. As a result, the victim, who was not identified in the press release, sustained burns and was transported to the scene by UnityPoint EMS.

According to UnityPoint, the victim has “extensive burns” and is being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for further treatment. The fire originated in the adjoining wall of a newly installed wood burning stove in the garage. The cause of the fire was determined to be flammable liquids stored too close to a source of combustion.

The Marshalltown Police Department, Marshalltown Public Works, UnityPoint Health EMS, and Alliant Energy assisted the MFD at the scene.
