RADCLIFFE — Residents of Hardin County will have a chance to learn more about battery energy storage systems during Fundamentals of Siting, Permitting and Planning Battery Energy Storage Systems, a public educational workshop scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on June 29 at the Radcliffe American Legion Post 317 in Radcliffe.

The workshop is part of the Iowa Reliable Energy Siting Through Technical Engagement and Planning program, known as Iowa R-STEP. It will give community members an overview of how large-scale energy storage projects work. Topics covered in the workshop include electric markets and grid planning, the evolution and current scope of battery safety standards and criteria to weigh the benefits and costs these systems have for host communities.

“These workshops give communities a chance to learn the facts and ask questions in a constructive way,” said Luke Seaberg, community development specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Local officials, landowners and residents all benefit when land use decisions are made using reliable information and open conversation.
