Questions about Joel Oliva’s background

I feel there are important details missing in Joel Oliva’s background information. His education and job experiences sound impressive, BUT where did he attend college? Does he have a college degree? Where, when and for whom was he employed? When and why did he move to Iowa and Marshalltown? Has he ever voted in a Marshalltown, Marshall County or Iowa election? Surely these would be questions asked if you were interviewing for any corporate job. We know Nan Benson has very capably handled the duties of County Auditor/Recorder, is dependable and cares about Marshall County residents. ...

Thank you Marshall County residents

Thank you, Marshall County residents, for making our October 6 Historical Home Tour a success! It was heartwarming to see so many out socializing on a beautiful day. The Historical Society of Marshall County is a non-profit organization, founded in 1908, which receives no federal, state or local funding. We couldn’t exist without a small annual allocation from the Sower Trustees, membership fees, donations and occasional fundraisers, like our home tour. So many people helped to make the tour happen, especially the homeowners: Julie and Kevin Hitchins, Kristyn and Barry Kell, Cherri ...

A correction

In the Oct. 16 Times Republican I stated incorrectly that Nan Benson initiated a program to assist township secretaries with budget issues at budget time. Actually, Whitney Hunt initiated it a few years ago and Nan has continued it. I apologize for and regret the error.

Nan Benson keeps Marshall County moving forward

Nan Benson keeps Marshall County moving forward. Her leadership through the tornado recovery was essential in preserving and updating the courthouse. Her vision and perseverance were vital in keeping Marshall County open, accessible, and serving the public during the pandemic. She’s an invaluable resource for fellow county department heads, township officials, and small-town government. She arrives early and works late. Nan puts in the extra time it takes to keep Marshall County moving forward. When there’s a meeting, she’s there. When someone needs a conversation, she makes ...

Mark Doland will serve Tama County well

I would like to heartily endorse Mark Doland for District 4 Tama County Supervisor. I’ve gotten to know Mark and Gwendy over the last few years, and I have friends that have known him much longer. His sterling reputation stretches back many years. I am confident that Mark is the best candidate for the job. Mark is a man of high integrity, strong Iowa values and is a hard worker. He has been involved in county government in other counties where he’s lived and done well there, and he will be a strong asset to Tama County now. The first things I look for in any candidate for public ...

BJ Hoffman supports the military community

As a County Supervisor in neighboring Grundy County, I have found myself intrigued by the happenings in Hardin County. From the public comment debacle to disinformation over a Second Amendment Sanctuary resolution that would turn Hardin County into the “Wild West” I’m entertained by the antics in Hardin County. Today I’m writing about something more serious, the care and compassion for United States Military Veterans and current service members. I enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard while still in high school. I took the oath and understood the task and responsibilities ...
