Rose Hill Cemetery not being taken care of

On Sunday, my mother went to place flowers at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marshalltown. What she encountered (certainly not the first time, but definitely the worst) was appalling! My grandparents headstone was completely covered with grass & weeds, as shown in the photos. You would never know it was there if not for the flower urn standing a little taller than the weeds. The subsequent photos are after my son took it upon himself to weedeat and clear the headstone. My aunt and uncles looked the same way. How can vacationing Joe Biden even show his face? He recently stated no American service person had been killed during his term. I just watched a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington for the 13 service members killed during the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. His arrogance is unforgettable and unforgiveable. Response to 13th Street opinion piece

I just wanted to weigh in on the LGBTQ+ celebration on 13th Street earlier this summer. We were unable to attend as we were out of town, but I hope to attend next year to support everyone who lives in our community. There was an opinion piece written asking, “Does the community really want to be known for an annual LGBTQ+ event?” My answer to that is a resounding YES!!! Correction to MARSHALLTOWN story

After reading the article about MARSHALLTOWN, I wanted to make a specific correction. The salesman and promoter Albert Diggins (in the article) was Albert Higgin. Most people wouldn’t know that; I do because I am the descendant of Lester Williams, who was there and I have my own history of the Trowel Company and Marshalltown Mfg. Co. George Williams was my father. The picture didn’t mention my married name. I was married to Jim York, who actually worked for Marshalltown Mfg. Co. and Lennox when M’town Mfg. Co. moved to Nebraska. A different point of view

I read with interest Jinita Boyd’s opinion about the recent Pride in the Park Celebration at West End Park on July 13th. I respect her opinion, but I just don’t agree with it. I attended the celebration and found it to be fun, welcoming and well attended. Kim (my wife) and I know several LGBTQ people and are close friends. It just doesn’t matter. At all. I agree with Jinita Boyd’s comments in the August 22 TR regarding the 13th Street LGBT event. I also thank her for the kind way she expressed her opinion. I know it reflects the opinions of many many more. I find it sad that we have to “get the courage” to write such a letter. But courage is needed I suppose since many who discuss this issue do not seem to always emulate her kindness. Well done, Jinita.
