Laurel Legion Auxiliary prepared for Memorial Day activities

LAUREL — The Laurel Harold McBroom American Legion Auxiliary May meeting was called to order by President Laura Tribby, in forum. Chaplain, Betty Nikkei, opened in prayer. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, silence for POW/MIA and deceased veterans and sang “God Bless America” followed with the recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution. Roll call was answered by seven members. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurers report was given, accepted and will be filed for audit. There was no correspondence.

It was brought to the Auxiliary’s attention that there was a hole in the roof. A estimate was received by Lions to get a whole new metal roof. This has had to be put on hold. Lions are going to fix the hole for now. It was discussed how to go about getting grants.

President Tribby reported on the 3rd District Spring conference. The 2018 slate of officers is complete, the ALA representative now has her own office at Iowa Veterans Home, the 3rd District Presidents project for TVH was $950 contributed by the units. Nicole Clapp, who is running for National ALA president fund has $1,100.

Lucille Buffington, Nancy Schroyer, LaDonna Runner and Betty Coulthard spent a afternoon putting new poppies on the white wooden crosses to be put at veterans graves at the two Laurel cemeteries. Nikkei made a motion, second by Rhea Osland to purchase three dozen doughnuts and rolls for Memorial Day to be served at the hall after the services at the two cemeteries, for public Coulthard will order and pick up. Runner is going to put a Poppy display in window of the Pitch Fork shop. It was also announced that former member, Karley Steineman, had their twins early and all doing good.

All county ALA bingo at IVH will be Aug.18 It is time to nominate officers for 2018, and all officers agreed to serve another year. Chaplain, Nikkei and President Tribby held a very nice memorial service for former member, Donna Lukehart. Osland, Poppy chairman, gave a nice Poppy program. Motion to adjourn by Runner, second by Schroyer. Chaplain had closing prayer. Hostess Runner served a fruit pizza.
