St. Mary’s Class of 1952 celebrates 65 years

On Monday, Class of St. Mary’s High School 1952 met at 8 a.m. Mass with Fr. Tom Braak (’51 grad) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown to celebrate the 65th Class Anniversary. After Mass, the class had coffee and donuts at the home of Marilyn Naughton, assisted by Gerry Best and Char Jacobson. The 65th Anniversary reunion was then observed at O’Hungry’s at the Best Western Motel in Marshalltown.

Alice Nicholson who officially got the e-mail invitations to her classmates two months ago, opened the event thanking Fr. Tom for the special Mass in the class’ honor as he joined the group for lunch and to graciously thank all who were present. After lunch orders were taken, each classmate was asked to give a brief life history.

Those present from out of state were Bill Lang, Sun City, Ariz., and his son Bob Lang, of Connecticut; and Shirley Duggleby, of Naples, Fla. Don Wood, Cedar Falls, Naughton, Best, Jacobson, Jeanette Loney, Ann McDonnell and Nicholson all local Marshalltown residents, and Margaret Holmes, of Laurel, Marjorie and John Ley, of Ankeny, attended the Class of ’52. Various pictures and notes were sent from Beverly Halverson, Broken Arrow, Okla.; Donette Sparks, Boulder, Colo.; and Minnetta Storjohann, Kerrville, Texas; along with “have a great day” wish from Jackie Mead, Merritt Island, Fla.; and Frank and Ann Navara, Amana, who were also absent.

Others attending were St. Mary’s class of ’53 Don and Marie Underwood, Jim and Esther Nusbaum, ’54 and ’53 and Helene Edel ’50 who stated reasons her brother Don Schemmel ’52 of Bloomington, Minn., was not attending.

No word was received from Rosemary Ryan, Sr. Myrna Ehrhardt or Sr. Donita Lentz. Eight members are deceased. The day ended chatting with everyone, and of course taking many pictures.
