American Legion Auxiliary Unit 46 discusses events

Meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 46 was called to order by President Debra Miller at 6 p.m. on July 12. Opening prayer by Chaplain Dorothy Hellberg was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, Moment of Silence and Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Sick Call was given following the President’s welcome.

The minutes by secretary Pat McLain were approved as given.

Treasurer’s report was given by Miller and accepted as given.

Membership report was not given due to absence of Meg Sponseller, chairperson. Dues for 2023 can begin being collected. Dues are $30 for the year.

Junior Report: McLain plans to have a meeting on Aug. 20, 2023.

Committee Reports: No reports this month

Old Business:

ALA shirts: Begin getting order will be submitted in August. Laurel Degelau will receive order money and will submit them.

Culvers Tip Night: July 11 Tip night raised $434.12 to be donated to The Wall That Heals project. The American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion Riders worked on this together

Smokin’ G’s Give Back Night: $226

Foreign Food Fair: July 16. ALA made German Potato Salad.

Card Party: Will be canceled until possibly spring of 2023.

The Wall That Heals: The Wall will arrive at the Iowa Veterans Home at 10 a.m. on Aug. 2. Open to IVH residents from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Leaves IVH at 2 p.m. to parade to Meskwaki where it will be set up. Open to the public Aug. 4-7. Will then be reloaded and go to Nebraska. The American Legion Riders will escort the Wall on the parade route. The ALA Unit 46 and Legion Riders will be helping with volunteer work while the Wall is on display. Aug. 4 is Marshalltown Day, Aug. 5 is Tama/Toledo Day and Aug. 6 is Meskwaki Day. Aug. 7 morning is the surrounding counties with the final ceremony being at 1:30 p.m. on Aug 7. Reloading will begin at 2 p.m.

Sullivan Brothers Museum: No report of date and activities yet.

New Business:

IVH Volunteers Opportunity: Volunteers needed.

IVH Ball Field Restoration: Being done by Quaker Oats.

Finance Committee: Laurel Degelau, Hellberg, Amy McCready and Barb Blake. Will begin working on 2023 budget.

Trunk or Treat: Canceled for October 2022. Money in reserve for this project to be used for Oktemberfest Parade.

Oktemberfest Parade: Will use Tomb of Unknown Float. Motion made by Dee Nortion and seconded by Kellie Allen to use Trunk or Treat money to buy 600 flags to hand out to children along parade route. More to come in future meeting in August and September. Theme is “Living in the Moment.”

Installation of Officers: Officers were installed for the years 2022-23 as follows: President, Miller; Vice President, Tanya Warnell, Barb Blake; Secretary, Marvis Drew; Treasurer, Laurel Degelau; Chaplain, Hellberg; Sargent of Arms Linda Fuller, Marcella Stewart, Allen and Ginger McCready.

Officers will be taking office at the Aug. 9 meeting and the Aug. 4 Board Meeting.

The next meeting is Aug. 9. A salad/dessert supper will be honoring the 2022 Girls State girls. They will be giving a report on the experiences they had at Girls State. The meal will be potluck by the General Membership.

Meeting was adjourned by Miller following the closing prayer from Hellberg and the closing rituals.
