Garden plant sales are on May 13

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Need some plants for a dream garden? Visit the three public plant sales on May 13.

The Marshall County Master Gardeners, Marshalltown Garden Club and the Central Iowa Daylily Society will each have a public plant sale on May 13.

These plant sales give local gardeners an opportunity to purchase a wide variety of locally grown perennials, wildflowers, iris, daylilies, shrubs and plant starts that are well suited to central Iowa growing conditions. The sales are near each other for easy shopping.

The Marshalltown Garden Club sale is from 9 a.m. to noon at the Farm Bureau office at 3205 S. Sixth St. in Marshalltown. Garden Club members support community projects such as the Judge Park Butterfly Garden, plantings at the Blue Star Highway Marker at the Iowa Veterans Home and contribute to scholarships for horticulture students.

The Central Iowa Daylily Society sale is from 9 a.m to noon just north of the Garden Club sale at the former Iowa Wholesale building at 3110 S. Sixth St. in Marshalltown. The Central Iowa Daylily Society was created by people passionate about daylilies and its mission is to promote Daylilies through education and community outreach. They provide public meetings, informative programs, auctions and tours of member’s gardens. These flowers require minimal care and grow well in Iowa, making them suitable for all landscapes. Since daylilies are also mostly drought-resistant, pest and disease-resistant, they are great for beginner gardeners.

The Marshall County Master Gardener’s sale is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ISU Extension office, 2608 S. Second St. in Marshalltown. The Master Gardener program trains garden enthusiasts to learn, grow and teach others about plants and gardening in the home landscape.

In addition to the great plants available, advice on planting and care will be available from the members who have grown these plants. For more information email skycutter@heartofiowa.net.
