Executive Director Nancy Steveson and Co-Chairs Dr. Theron Schutte and Dr. Dennis Drager informed the Matins Kiwanis about the Marshalltown Area United Way campaign. So far, $450,000 has been raised toward the goal of $780,000 that is used to support 27 agencies providing critical human services.
The Tuesday Musical Club recently contributed $400 to Marshalltown High School to cover the cost of one new band uniform. Shown next to the uniform at left is Brett Umthun, band instructor at MHS, Mary Giese, club president (center) and Karen Engesser, club treasurer.
The Noon Optimist Club of Marshalltown met at the Orpheum on Oct. 24 with President Brian Batterson presiding. Rev. Michael Herschberger gave the invocation followed with the Pledge of Allegiance. One guest attended. Greg DeSaulniers provided the community calendar of events for the upcoming week. Hershberger updated members on the Avenue of Flags project. The regular meeting of the Kiwanis P.M. met at Legends Oct. 30. President elect Gary Mason called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Mason welcomed guest Gary Harrington and introduced the guest speaker Lucas Baedke, building and grounds supervisor for Marshall County. Baedke gave the club an overview of the rebuild of our Courthouse following the July 19, 2018 tornado. The regular meeting of Chapter MJ was held on Monday at the home of Bonnie Lowry. Janice Ott served as co-hostess. Plans were made for the distribution of proceeds from the October Autumn Silent Auction Fundraiser to various P.E.O. projects. Volunteers from the chapter signed up to serve as hostesses in the hospitality room at the May 2020 P.E.O. State Convention in Des Moines. Nan Benson, Marshall County auditor and recorder and commissioner of elections, spoke on Monday at P.E.O. Chapter NU. Her program about her career duties and the tornado damage to the courthouse and its restoration was very interesting and informative.
