Marshalltown’s Glenn to fight for featherweight championship
Mixed martial arts fighter, Rick “The Gladiator” Glenn of Marshalltown did not waste any time getting a championship match rescheduled against Georgi Karakhanyan.
The two 145-pounders will face off for the World Series Of Fighting featherweight title in the main event, live on NBC Sports at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, June 21.
The two pugilists were scheduled to fight Dec. 7, but a family emergency forced Glenn to request a postponement.
Since then, Glenn has been able to concentrate on training for the toughest fight of his career, said Shaun White of Marshalltown, Glenn’s manager.
“I would love to get the community behind Rick,” said White. “This will be amazing fight, as both are on a long winning streak and both like to strike and finish fights. I see this being the fight of the year. Rick, is going to get a huge amount of recognition nationally, since this is the main event and title fight!”
Glenn, 14-2-1(win-loss-draw) has a 12-bout winning streak, while Karakhanyan, (23-3-1), a Russian native who became a U.S. citizen, has won 9 consecutively.
One fighter’s winning streak will end, and Glenn’s fans want it to be Karakhanyan.
Karakhanyan, of Riverside, Calif., is a former professional soccer player, but has a strong background in the martial arts, according to his Facebook page.
He competed in his first full contact martial arts event at age 8. He turned professional in 2006, as did Glenn.
The Marshalltown native and Marshalltown High School alum lives in Milwaukee and trains at the renown Roufusport Gym in the Wisconsin city.
White said a turning point in Glenn’s career was moving to Milwaukee to train at Roufusport.
Glenn made a name for himself in WSOF circles last year by defeating the undefeated. He topped Artur Rofi, 6-1-1, by unanimous decision in September. It was his 11th victory in 12 fights. Previously, Glenn knocked out the undefeated Alexandre “Pulga” Pimentel of Brazil, now 12-1-0 in March. Pimentel was the reigning national champion of Brazilian Jiujitsu – a martial art and combat sport.
Glenn is married to Jenny (nee Landas) of Marshalltown and an MHS alum.
Also in Glenn’s corner is local band Agony of Defeat. The group provided background music for a video featuring Glenn and his coaches available on the website youtu.be/ibcf3TPxGAY.
Another long-time supporter is local businessman Steve Priske, owner of Rumours Bar & Grill.
“Rick is genuine,” Priske said. “He’s stopped down several times, so we’ve become acquainted. He’s never forgotten Marshalltown is his hometown. Before the fight starts, the television screen will identify Marshalltown as his hometown … I like that.”
