Talk about a ‘mobile’ home
Ferneau & Sons House Moving & Raising LLC of Marshalltown made the slow journey from Reed Avenue near the Marshalltown Airport to State Center this week, moving this house along several back roads throughout the county. Kevin Ferneau said the move began at 7 a.m. and was completed by about 2 p.m. Wednesday. The effort took months of planning, including coordination with utility companies which had to remove power lines to adjust for the height of the house. Ferneau and his sons also had to carefully navigate crossing the Indian Bridge across the Iowa River. Ferneau said the house weighed about 80,000 lbs., but if you add the mobile carrier and tow truck, it totaled 125,000 lbs. of weight that was moving along the backroads of Marshall County. “Everybody did an awesome job,” Ferneau said, giving credit to this sons, Matt and Logan, who did all the prep work in getting the house from Reed Avenue to State Center. “I’m just very proud of them … they’re the sixth generation of house movers in the family.” The house is part of a community development project between the city of State Center and Mid-Iowa Habitat for Humanity.
