NEVADA — Mayor of Nevada and Story County Republican Chair Brett Barker has announced his candidacy for Iowa House District 51 in the 2024 election. The district, which includes most of rural Marshall County north and west of Marshalltown and most of Story County outside of Ames, is currently represented by Rep. Dave Deyoe, a fellow Republican from Nevada who has announced his upcoming retirement.
Barker and his wife Tracy live in Nevada, where they are raising their four daughters. Barker is a pharmacist at NuCara Pharmacy and Senior Policy Advisor for the Iowa Pharmacy Association. He has served as the Republican Party of Story County Chair since 2015. His experience in public service began in 2011 as a member of the Nevada city council.
“I want to thank Representative Deyoe for his many years of service to Iowa and to our House District,” Barker said. “I am running for the Iowa House because my depth of experience in economic development, healthcare, rural revitalization, and foster care will help our state enact policies where families can thrive and the next generation is proud to call home.”
