CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to an apartment blaze at 119 E. State St. on Sunday.
At approximately midnight on Sunday, the Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to 119 E. State Street for a structure fire. Upon arrival, a two-story apartment building was found with a working fire in an upstairs apartment. Firefighters threw two ladders to the affected apartment to search for victims as the initial attack line was advanced to it.
No victims were found, and the fire was extinguished quickly with the first hose line, and didn’t extend outside the apartment. The building had working smoke detectors, which alerted the occupants of the building to the fire. The tenant of the fire apartment was displaced as well as the tenant directly below.
Both sets of tenants are being supported by family, friends, and the American Red Cross, according to a press release from the MFD. Following the incident, the building was secured by ServiceMaster. The cause of the fire was determined to be the careless discarding of smoking materials and unintentional.
Firefighters were at the scene for approximately two hours. The Marshalltown Police Department, Alliant Energy, and UnityPoint EMS assisted at the scene.
