Upsetting concerns
I have the same upsetting concerns felt by all of us — for example, cuts in Medicare, growing the national debt, rising prices — all are really worrisome. But I must refer to another concern where our representatives and senators have let us down.
The federal funding for Iowa Public TV and radio were removed, leaving both in dire circumstances. I looked forward to the high school football playoffs. I noted the young men that I hoped would play for Iowa. IPTV also showcased other high school playoffs as well as the accomplishments of our young Iowans in the arts. Topping off our list of events that IPTV brings us is the Iowa State Fair. I no longer can attend the fair, so I had truly enjoyed watching it on TV. I particularly loved the Talent Sprouts. We want Iowa programs about Iowa and for Iowa.
In short, our senators and representatives have attacked the entities that bring us our state. We should, at the very least as Iowans, be able to celebrate our own for heaven’s sake.
The argument that our senators and representatives used for pulling the financial rug from under IPTV is that it is biased toward the liberal viewpoint. I should hope they, at least occasionally, watch “Iowa Press.” Both Republicans and Democrats are guests. As a matter of fact, Senator Henson, who commented that she believed IPTV was biased, was more than once a guest on “Iowa Press.”
I admit I love other programming — shows like Downton Abbey, Father Brown, Finding Your Roots, NOVA, Antique Roadshow and many more. Perhaps the greatest loss would be Sesame Street. The programs for children are exceptional. They learn skills to help them in school and values like being kind to others.
Sadly, every single one of our senators and representatives voted to defund IPTV. No senator or representative, and I do mean not one, should be the politician who kills Big Bird. Please contact them and let them know we want Iowa’s television fully funded.
