Vote for Democratic candidates

To my Republican friends: The Democratic party has a fine collection of candidates that will do well for you in the future. They will be accountable and demand accountability of others. They will work to bring a safe and secure future to the agriculture, commerce, and communities in Iowa. Let me start with Chris Jones, for Secretary of Agriculture, who will turn our farming system into one that depends less on maximum yields of corn and soy and high returns for out-of-state investors and more on reasonable profits and better health for farmers and their communities. John Norwood ...

Survivors

The "SURVIVORS" is one of several pro-life organizations which are trying to preserve the lives of unborn children. This is a noble work in an increasingly pagan, humanistic culture. The 'SURVIVORS" seeks to inform about, and to stop, the practice of "harvesting" aborted baby parts and selling them to research centers which are often tax-payer subsidized, . The term "God bless America" is a commonly used phrase. The Holy, Almighty God who is revealed in the Holy Bible has indeed sovereignly blessed our nation in many ways. Do you see any reason why He might ...

How Marshalltown could sell a data center to the public

First of all, I am personally against having a Data Center in Marshalltown or Marshall County for numerous reasons. Having said that, I believe city officials will try to ram this down our throats against the will of the majority, no matter what. So I have a proposal. If city officials are bent on having a Data Center, which they say may generate $3.5 million annually in new tax revenue, how about the good citizens of Marshalltown demand that for at least 20 years, every penny of tax money generated from 'a Data Center' goes to paying down our current $80 million outstanding debt. ...

A sacred duty to protect the right to vote

As a pastor serving in Marshall County, I feel compelled to speak to a grave concern as we approach this year’s midterm elections. Growing rhetoric and uncertainty have left some Iowans questioning whether our elections will remain free, fair, and accessible to every eligible voter. I believe the right to vote is sacred. As Christians, voting is one way we put action behind our hopes and dreams for our communities, our state, and our nation. Recent developments, including Secretary of State Paul Pate’s decision to share Iowa voter registration records with the federal government, ...

Turn the ballot over

Make no mistake about it. Marshalltown, even at it’s current size, is rural. If you are a Baby Boomer you have become aware of how rural our health care system is. We have been affected for decades by budget cuts for public education. We need to reverse this trend by turning over the ballot and voting NO on Amendment 1. Well educated public school students will keep our community vital in the future.

Amendment 1

As early voting is soon underway, please remember to complete your ballot and vote NO on Amendment 1. The NO vote does NOT raise our taxes. It maintains the current level of legislative flexibility to make changes in the tax rate if there is a budget emergency. A NO vote is in the best interests of taxpayers, our schools and other services provided by state funding, and it ensures that the legislature can act more quickly than a 60% majority requirement would allow.
