Appreciation for community support

The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #46, Marshalltown thanks the businesses, merchants and individuals who provided prizes and gift certificates to share with attendees at the annual St. Patrick’s card party. It is one of many fundraisers we do to provide support and services to our veterans in the American Legion Auxiliary programs. Many of these businesses have contributed in past years and we continue to appreciate their contributions to our efforts. We also appreciate the patrons who attend this annual event. This auxiliary fundraiser supports veteran projects and programs we ...

The right to be

Nearly 40 % of our nation’s population now check the “None” square when asked what religion they prefer, including myself. This acknowledgement gives no one else the right to assume that we “none’s” have any less morals or standards than those who check a certain religion, especially now while hypocrisy runs rampant amongst believers. The current movement of conservative-dominated governments to misinterpret the constitutional right of Freedom of Religion to mean that religions have the right to impose their beliefs on others is totally irrational. For example, why anyone ...

Our cooperative is strong!

Dear friends of the Village Coop of Marshalltown, The Des Moines Register recently published an article regarding the failure of a number of cooperative projects in Iowa. We at the Village Coop of Marshalltown are reaching out to future Coop members to ease any concerns you may have about the Village Cooperative of Marshalltown. It has been nearly 14 years since the opening of the Village Cooperative of Marshalltown. Our finances are in very ...

Speeding problem must be addressed

As responsible taxpayers and citizens, we can’t understand why vehicles are allowed to drive 20,25,30 mph and more over the speed limits. Friday vehicles were going by my house at 45 and 50 mph. We are a freeway for commuters at Emerson, Lennox and JBS. I don’t walk my dog from 3 to 5:30 p.m. We were told there would be portable cameras because there is a shortage of police and driving down a street once a day won’t help. Several months ago a vehicle speeding down my street hit the parking sign, threw it into my yard, drove down the terrace and back onto the street. A neighbor ...

Fostering a mindset of kindness, empathy, and gratitude

Marshalltown is the vibrant thread that weaves together my memories, dreams, and aspirations. Born and raised here, I chose to return, seeking to raise our family amidst the familiar sights and sounds of our beloved community. As I navigate the familiar streets, I am in awe with a sense of pride and momentum. Marshalltown, once the backdrop of my childhood, now stands as a testament to resilience and progress. The signs of growth and revitalization are everywhere, painting a picture of a town that refuses to be defined by its past challenges. Behind this transformation is a silent ...

Feenstra: Helps or hinders?

On March 17, Congressman Randy Feenstra of District 4 Iowa filed for reelection. With Governor Reynolds at his side, Congressman Feenstra proudly announced his “Save Our Seniors Act.” This is approximately the 609th bill he’s introduced, none of which he’s passed. The “SOSA” bill doesn’t save, protect, or boost security. The bill’s purpose is to simply show us what we already know. Since Congressional Republicans are unwilling to raise the cap on taxable income for the rich or put back the money Reagan and Bush II took out of Social Security, it will run out of money in ...
