Area squads chase Gilbert in Jewell

JEWELL – Gilbert reigned on both sides of the South Hamilton Invitational on Thursday, winning the girls and the boys race with a pair of area teams chasing them to the finish line.

On the girls’ side, the Class 3A No. 4-ranked Tigers totaled 32 points to hold off 1A No. 8 West Marshall (60) and 1A No. 6 Panorama (73).

East Marshall was a distant fourth with 153, while Colo-NESCO (317) was last out of 11 teams.

Three runners medaled for West Marshall, led by Madie Streeter with a fifth-place finish of 15 minutes, 59 seconds. Shannon Breja was seventh in 16:08 and Ashlee Johnson came in 10th in 16:23. Allison Hilleman (18th, 17:06) and Georgia Porter (20th, 17:07) rounded out the team scoring for the Trojans.

Haley Fye paced East Marshall with a third-place finish. Bobbi Amendt (24th), Carrington Curphy (30th), Erin Patterson (51st) and Cindy Liera (65th) completed the scoring.

On the boys’ side, 3A’s top-ranked Gilbert led the way with 42 points, while 2A No. 3 East Marshall had 55 points in second place and 2A No. 10 Eagle Grove (115) was third.

West Marshall (229) took ninth and Colo-NESCO (283) was 10th in the 13-team meet.

East Marshall had four medalists with Nick Meling taking fourth, Caleb Benzing finishing sixth, Sam Benzing was seventh and Josh Benzing eighth. Brady Fritz finished off the team scoring in 30th.

West Marshall was paced by Edison Weig in 25th (18:16). Austin Grimm took 42nd, Josh Morrow was 53rd, Jake Goecke took 62nd and Garrett Nichols placed 66th.
