IGCA honors five area volleyball standouts
Coming off its fifth straight state tournament appearance, Grundy Center had a trio of players selected to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s Class 2A all-state volleyball teams.
Senior libero Riley Sents was named to the first team, while juniors Alyssa Mathews and Katie Lindeman were named to the second team and honorable mention, respectively.
All three also earned a spot on the Class 2A Central all-district squad with Sents and Lindeman garnering repeat selections.
BCLUW junior Olivia Callaway also attained Class 2A honorable mention and joined the Spartan trifecta on the all-district unit.
Marshalltown’s Rachel Whaley rounded out the area’s recognized quintet with a nod on the Class 5A West all-district team.
Sents, who was named all-state honorable mention as a freshman and second team in both 2012 and 2013, led her class in digs for the fourth year in a row. The University of Missouri signee led the Spartans scrappy defense with 623 digs, pushing her career total to 2,756. The two-time all-NICL West Division player of the year was also a weapon on serve pacing the reigning NICL West Division champs with a 93.9 serve efficiency (325-of-346) while also tallying 33 aces.
Mathews spread the ball around in Grundy Center’s versatile attack as its setter with 803 assists. She also registered a team-best 54 aces and converted 354-of-410 attempts for a serve efficiency of 86.3 percent.
Lindeman led the Spartans’ balanced offense up front with 265 kills including a career-best 18 in the team’s five-set state quarterfinal loss to Sumner-Fredericksburg. The junior finished with a 91.1 percent efficiency on serve connecting on 389-of-427 attempts with 51 service winners. The outside hitter finished second on the team with 349 digs and joins Mathews as two of 11 players that returns to the squad next season. Grundy Center was once again tested by a challenging regular season schedule and finished with a record of 29-10.
Callaway powered a resurgent season for the Comets with a team-best 229 kills. The junior outside hitter also served 201-of-221 (91 percent) with 22 aces and finished second on the squad in both digs (171) and total blocks (33). The Comets finished runner-up in the NICL West and posted an overall mark of 22-8, falling to eventual Class 2A state champion Dike-New Hartford in the second round of the postseason. BCLUW’s 22 wins set a new school record as coach Kristen Garber shared NICL West Division Coach of the Year honors with Grundy Center’s Darwin Sents.
Whaley provided a versatile presence for the Bobcats this fall leading the team in kills, digs and aces. The junior standout recorded 287 kills, 207 digs and 43 aces as Marshalltown captured the Central Iowa Conference Norther Division title and finished with an overall record of 21-14. The Bobcats closed their season with a five-game loss to Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Region 3 semifinal. Whaley is one of eight members that return for MHS in 2015.
