West Marshall opens with a victory

STATE CENTER – Alex Dickey had a 65-yard pick-six, Beau Coberley had a 64-yard touchdown dash and the West Marshall football team’s fast start fueled a season-opening 30-12 win over Waterloo Columbus here Friday night.

Dickey’s 65-yard return of an interception just before halftime got the Trojans out to a 30-0 lead at the break.

Coberley led West Marshall with 104 yards rushing on just six carries, while Dickey toted the pigskin 20 times for 70 yards. Cameron Bannister and Chase Burr both added short touchdown plunges in the first half.

Ross Randall had two interceptions and finished with six total tackles on defense. Burr had 6.5 tackles, and Christian Carbajal had six solo stops as well. Logan Millizer and Dickey both totaled five tackles, two behind the line of scrimmage.

The Trojans close non-district play next Friday night at Ogden.

Clark, Trojans claim rivalry trophy

GRINNELL – Kolbie Clark had 141 yards rushing, 68 receiving and totaled four touchdowns as the South Tama County football team claimed the Steve Kriegel Memorial Trophy with a season-opening 53-27 win over rival Grinnell on Friday night.

Clark averaged 7.8 yards on 18 carries in his first start as the Trojans’ featured back, and Isaac Judge added 70 yards and a touchdown. Tanner Probasco scored two rushing TDs on just seven carries, accumulating 56 yards, and also returned a kickoff 83 yards for a score.

South Tama quarterback Clayton Rosenberger completed 8-of-9 passing attempts for 105 yards, and Lane Koch tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Clark on his only attempt.

Judge led the STC defense with eight solo tackles, two assists and 2 1/2 quarterback sacks. Probasco had eight solo stops, and Brady Fritz finished with 7.5 tackles.

Grinnell quarterback Seth Howard threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns in a losing cause, going 21-for-37 with an interception. Alex Farmer had five catches for 144 yards and two TDs, and Jake Simon had seven grabs for 128 yards and a score.

South Tama hosts Williamsburg on Friday night.
