ISU women down Sooners, 91-70

NORMAN, Okla. — The Iowa State University women’s basketball team had a bright and early 10:30 a.m. tipoff against Oklahoma in a Big 12 Conference showdown on Wednesday, and after the Cyclones rubbed the sleep from their eyes they ran away with a 91-70 victory.

After seven lead changes in the first quarter, ISU (20-6, 10-4) eventually carved out a 22-15 lead on the Sooners (6-19, 2-12). Oklahoma would tie things up again at 29-29 midway through the second, but the Cyclones went on a 14-3 run to close the half and never looked back.

Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said with the early tip and the travel issues due to a storm hindering his team it could have come out sluggish and taken a loss, but they handled the adversity well.

“I was so proud of the way they handled all of this,” Fennelly said in his postgame press conference. “We got in late last night, obviously we can’t control the weather. A lot of teams would look for excuses, we didn’t get to practice for a morning game, but I am really poroud of the way we handled it.”

Bridget Carleton had another great game for the Cyclones, as she had a game-high 28 points and she pulled down 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the year. She was 11-for-17 from the floor and had three assists and two steals to her name as well.

Four other Cyclones were also in double figures, as Kristin Scott had 16 points, Madison Wise 14, Ashley Joens 13 and Alexa Middleton 10, putting all five starters in double figures.

Ana Llanusa led the Sooners with 20 points, while Jessi Murcer and Shaina Pellington both had 14.

Iowa State is back at home on Saturday when it hosts No. 1 Baylor at Hilton Coliseum, starting at 3 p.m.
