SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys finish fifth at Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown boys track and field team finished fifth out of five teams in the large school class at the Fort Dodge Dodger Relays on Monday with 38 points.

Jordan Anderson and Gabe Wyant had the best individual finishes of the day for the Bobcats, as Anderson was third in the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 8 inches, and Wyant took third in the long jump with a vault of 19-5 1/2.

Two Bobcat relays finished in second place as well. The 4×100-meter team of Deonte’ Dean, Giorgio DiIorio, Wyant and Jaiden Buchanan ran a season-best time of 45.97 seconds to place second, and the 4×800 team of Bennett O’Hare, Brent Johnson, Zach Bitker and Gage Stalzer ran a 9:10.44 to take runner-up honors.

Waterloo East soccer stifles MHS girls

WATERLOO — The Marshalltown girls soccer team fell to Waterloo East on the road on Monday, 5-0.

Jade Tejada and Yatnia Hernandez both had shots on goal for the Bobcats (0-2). Avygail Smith allowed five goals in 76 minutes but she also recorded 15 saves for a .75 save percentage.

Kayla Koch was the leading scorer for the Trojans (2-1) with two goals, while Erin Rankin, Ajla Sivic and Faith Trelka each had a goal. Olivia Worthley led Waterloo East with two assists and Izzy Guyer had a shutout in goal.

The MHS girls next play Class 1A No. 8 Waterloo Columbus in Waterloo on Thursday, starting at 5:30 p.m.

STC/EM boys soccer scores upset win

DYERSVILLE — The South Tama County/East Marshall boys soccer team picked up its first win on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Class 1A No. 6 Dyersville Beckman.

Jonathan Castrejon had two goals for the Trojans (1-2) and Jeffrey Fuentes had a goal and an assist. Guillermo Garcia had eight saves in 80 minutes between the posts, and he held the Blazers (2-1) to a season low in scoring.

Ryan Burchard and Michael Keegan both scored for Dyersville Beckman.

South Tama/East Marshall will try to build some momentum heading into a game with Independence on Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Trojan boys take Baxter Invite crown

BAXTER — The West Marshall boys track and field team won the Baxter Bolt Invite on Monday with 120 points.

The Trojans had seven overall first-place finishes, three in relays and four individuals.

Jarrin Goecke won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.93 seconds and he was first in the long jump with a vault of 18 feet. Cameron Bannister won the 200 in 23.87, and he was followed by Jake Tollefson in second with a 24.03. Bannister also won the 400 in 52.42.

The sprint medley relay team of Colby McMorran, Josh Larsen, Tollefson and Bannister won with a 1:38.97, the 4×100 relay team of Larsen, Tollefson, Bannister and Goecke was first with a 45.58 and the 4×200 team of McMorran, Larsen, Ben Kielman and Goecke placed first with a 1:39.86.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck was eighth out of nine teams with 17 points.

Zane Stice placed fourth in the 400 hurdles, Paul Brockett finished fourth in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600, while Ethan Gienger was fifth in the high jump, Ridge Van Daele was sixth in the 800, Sam Schildroth was sixth in the 400 and Keagan Giesking was sixth in the 100.
