T-R PHOTO BY THORN COMPTON - Marshalltown Community College sophomore Candido Encarnacion (17) comes in to score while Tyler Coleman (10) is hot on his heels in the fifth inning of game one of a doubleheader with Iowa Western on Monday. The Reivers won the first game, 21-6, and the second was suspended due to darkness.

The Marshalltown Community College baseball team hosted Iowa Western for it home opener on Monday, and though it was a scheduled as a doubleheader only one game was able to finish in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I showdown.

Due to an issue with umpire scheduling, the doubleheader started an hour and a half after its original scheduled time. In the first game, which started at 3 p.m., the Tigers trailed by just two runs heading to the sixth inning, but the Reivers scored 13 runs in the sixth and eventually won 21-6.

Game two played as long as it could, but it was eventually suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to darkness with MCC leading 5-4.

After the top of the third in game one, the Tigers (2-14, 0-3) trailed 7-0 to the Reivers (20-4, 3-0), but MCC outscored Iowa Western 6-1 in the next three innings to make it a two-run game heading to the sixth.

The Reivers put on an impressive display of power in the top of the sixth, however, scoring 13 total runs and hitting four home runs that plated eight, including a grand slam by Ronald Sweeny the third. MCC couldn’t answer in the bottom of the frame and the game ended there.

Ryan Carter went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Tigers, Candido Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI and Tyler Coleman and Kole Jurgens both had a hit and an RBI.

Jason Everaert took the loss for MCC after allowing eight hits and seven runs in the three innings.

Dalton Mall earned the win for Iowa Western after coming in as relief for starting pitcher Jared Simpson and Trystan Kimmel got the save.

Through three innings in game two, Tiger pitcher Walter Hernandez had allowed four hits and four runs while striking out six and walking one. Coleman was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and Reece Blay had an RBI triple that scored Ryan Carter.
