SPORTS SHORTS: MHS baseball intrasquad game Friday

The Marshalltown High School baseball team will be playing its annual intrasquad game on Friday at the MHS diamond.

The nine-inning game will begin at 6 p.m. and include members of the Bobcats’ varsity, sophomore and freshman squads.

Admission is free for the contest, which will be the only public competition for the team prior to the season’s home opener against Newton on May 21.

In the event of rain, Saturday, May 11 is the makeup date for the scrimmage.

STC boys soccer reaches W-SR finals

WAVERLY — The South Tama County boys soccer team lost in the finals of the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament to Class 1A No. 1 Waterloo Columbus, 3-0.

The Trojans (9-4) reached the final game by defeating No. 10 Center Point-Urbana in the opening round, 1-0, and Decorah in the semifinals, 2-1.

Jonathan Castrejon had the winning goal against the Stormin’ Pointers for his 29th of the year, and he assisted on a goal against the Vikings for his ninth assist of the season. Castrejon is second in 1A in points and total points with 67.

Roger Flores and Jeffrey Fuentes netted the scores against Decorah, while Guillermo Garcia played all 180 minutes between the posts, allowing four goals and recording 12 total saves.

Redhawk boys fourth at Iowa Star meet

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The North Tama boys track and field team finished in fourth at the Iowa Star Conference track meet on Thursday with 83 team points.

Tayten Payne and Ryan McLean both took runner-up spots in field events, with Payne placing second in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 1 1/4 inches, and McLean taking second in the shot put with a heave of 45-2.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Payne, Cael Even, Gabe Kopriva and Hale Hulme placed second for the Redhawks in a time of 1 minute, 6.07 seconds, while the distance medley team of Nathan Kucera, Adam Greiner, Payne and Logan Kennedy was third with a time of 4:04.01 and the 4×200-meter team of Chase Morrison, Noah Weber, Hulme and Luke Pennell was third after running a 1:37.74.

GMG placed seventh in the meet with a team score of 59.5. The Wolverines took the top spot in two events, with Ethan Karsjen winning the 400 with a season-best time of 51.84 and the sprint medley relay team of Brock Baldazo, Andrew Collins, Carson Wobeter and Karsjen also winning with a 1:38.6.

Conner Murty had the best individual showing for GMG by placing third in the discus with a toss of 112-8.

Meskwaki, who hosted the meet, finished in 12th out of 13 teams with 17 points. Tate Bear placed second in the discus for the Warriors with a throw of 116-9 and Noah Seymour was sixth in the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:02.38.

North Tama girls seventh at ISC meet

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The North Tama girls track and field team placed seventh in the Iowa Star Conference track meet on Thursday with 53.5 points.

The Redhawks did well in the relays, with the 4×400-meter team of Molly Kvidera, Julianna Breakenridge, Carlie Gorder and Abby DeBoef winning in a time of 4 minutes, 29.06 seconds.

The 4×800 team Kvidera, Breakenridge, Gorder and Mya Sierra, the sprint medley team of Takoa Kopriva, Gorder, Symphony McDowell and DeBoef and the distance medley team of Kopriva, McDowell, DeBoef and Kvidera all placed third.

Breakenridge was the top individual placer for North Tama, coming in second in the 800 with a 2:40.87.

GMG was 12th out of 13 teams in the meet with 20 points. The Wolverines had their best finish in the 4×800 with the team of Angel Schewe, Mable Dieleman, Zoe Duncan and Maesa Groth placing second with a 10:57.18.

Schewe also was fifth in the 800 with a 2:43.72 and Groth was fifth in the 1,500 with a 5:45.68.

Meskwaki was 13th with with 13 points. Shye Johnson placed sixth in the 1,500 after running a 5:51.6 and Danielle Seymour placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, 10 1/2 inches, and seventh in the discus with a throw of 95-9.

Ex-Mustang into DWU Hall of Fame

MITCHELL, S.D. — Brock Seim, a 2002 East Marshall High School graduate, was inducted into the Dakota Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame on April 27 to honor his prolific collegiate basketball career.

Seim, a 6-foot-6 forward, was a two-time conference player of the year and first-team all-state selection at East Marshall. He spent three years at the University of South Dakota, including a redshirt season, before transferring to Dakota Wesleyan.

Seim was a part of a South Dakota team that set the program record with 27 wins in 2004-05 on its way to a North Central Conference championship and an NCAA Division II Tournament berth. He then transfered to nearby Dakota Wesleyan, where he was twice named to an NAIA All-America team before graduating in 2007.

Seim totaled 1,271 points, 546 rebounds, 145 3-pointers, 122 assists and 121 steals in 56 career games in two seasons at Dakota Wesleyan, and 214 points in two previous seasons at South Dakota. He was a two-time first-team Great Plains Athletic Conference selection at DWU and the league’s Player of the Year in 2006-07. Seim was a second-team All-American as a junior and a first-team honoree as a senior.

Seim averaged 22.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game with the Tigers. He became the fastest to score 1,000 points at Dakota Wesleyan and graduated 27th on the school’s all-time scoring list in just two seasons.

Seim, his wife Danielle and their sons Kaden and Brady reside in Sun Prairie, Wis., where Brock is a senior pricing actuary at American Family Insurance. He is the son of Tim and Jan Seim of Le Grand.

ISU Tailgate Tour to visit Marshalltown

AMES — The 2019 Iowa State Tailgate Tour is coming to Marshalltown.

Iowa State head coaches Matt Campbell (football), Steve Prohm (men’s basketball), Bill Fennelly (women’s basketball), Christy Johnson-Lynch (volleyball) and Kevin Dresser (wrestling), along with athletic director Jamie Pollard, will be at the Emerson Innovation Center (301 S. 1st Ave.) at noon on May 22.

The group travels on from Marshalltown for a 5:30 p.m. engagement at the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo.

Cyclones schedule summer trip to Italy

AMES — The Iowa State men’s basketball team will be traveling overseas this summer for a 10-day trip to Italy with three games scheduled against international competition.

The trip is slated for August 10-20 starting in Rome with stops in Florence, Pisa and Venice. The games and opponents have not yet been scheduled, but tentative dates and locations are Aug. 13 in Rome, Aug. 15 in Pisa and Aug. 18 in Vicenza.

This marks the fourth summer trip in program history. The Cyclones previously visited Mexico (2004), Italy (2011) and Spain (2015).
