AMES — Natalie Henson finished one stroke off the pace and the Marshalltown girls’ golf team placed sixth out of 18 teams at the Turk Bowman Invitational hosted by Ames on Monday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.

The competition-rich tournament was greeted by a challenging course and 40-mile-per-hour winds, making it a tough day on the links for all comers. Gilbert won the tournament with a 340 team score having entered the event with a state-best 322.10 18-hole adjusted average.

Marshalltown finished in with a 396 team tally, just back of Nevada (391) and Dowling Catholic (394) in the completed standings.

Behind Gilbert, it was Ames (358) and Norwalk (380) in the medals.

Marshalltown’s Henson scored a medal for fourth place despite tying for the second-best score of the day. Gilbert’s Eden Lohrbach shot a 81 for medalist honors thanks to a cardback over Clear Lake’s Meghan DeLong, who also shot 81. Henson and Olivia Axmear of Nevada both shot 82, with a cardback breaking that tie as well.

“Natalie Henson had a couple tough holes that kept her from her third-straight invite win, but still managed to be right there at the end,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson.

In support of Henson, Gaby Estabrook placed 18th overall with a round of 93, and Harper Wilson was 24th with her 99. Emma Clawson contributed the final score to the team total with a 122.

Hallie Kuhlers (129) and Kenedy Lammert (138) also participated for the Bobcats.

“Veenker is a tough course in perfect conditions and becomes a beast when you see it playing the way we did,” Johnson said. “Given the fact that we had winds gusting over 40 mph, I thought we battled well and did a good job taking what the course was giving.

“Again, we were able to finish in the top third of a highly competitive field, which is encouraging to see at this point in the season.”

The Bobcats are back in action with an Iowa Alliance Conference dual meet on Tuesday against Mason City, slated for a 3:30 p.m. tee time at Elmwood Country Club.
