SPORTS SHORTS: MCC volleyball goes 4-0 at SCC tourney

WEST BURLINGTON — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team closed out the Jimmy John’s Invite with a pair of wins on Saturday.

MCC swept NIACC 26-24, 25-19, 25-14. The Tigers followed later in the day with another sweep against the host team Southeastern, 25-19, 25-14, 25-16.

MCC improves to 9-3 overall on the season. The Tigers will return home on Sept. 7 and will host both Southeast CC and Southeastern CC starting at 1 p.m.

West Marshall netters 2-2 at home

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall volleyball team finished 2-2 at its annual tournament, closing the day with a competitive loss to a ranked team.

The Trojans (2-3) began pool play with a 21-8, 21-9 win over Ogden and a 21-16, 21-14 defeat of Davis County. Waterloo Columbus closed pool play for West Marshall by holding off the Trojans in three sets, 21-18, 23-25, 15-10.

In the first round of single-elimination bracket play, Class 2A No. 12 Grundy Center ended West Marshall’s run with a 25-18, 25-14 setback.

Leading the Trojans for the day were Teresa Disney and Renae Schaper, who had 16 kills apiece. Disney had 17 digs, two blocks and a team-high 10 service aces, while Schaper had 11 digs and one block.

Morgan Cripps paced the defense with 28 digs and was 21-for-25 serving with four aces. Hana Hohnstein totaled 34 assists and Reilly Jensen had 16 more. Mary Wilkey contributed 10 kills while Attiyah Lazard and Peyton Halverson both had five kills. Lazard added a team-best four blocks.

Trojans fail to avenge playoff loss

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall football team opened the fall with a 14-7 loss to Williamsburg.

Willamsburg knocked West Marshall out of the first round of the playoffs a season ago.

Trojan senior quarterback Peyton Pope ran for 116 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts. In the air, Pope was 5-for-13 for 63 yards and two interceptions. Pope also successfully kicked West Marshall’s extra point.

Leading the Trojan receivers was junior Brayden Evertsen with four catches for 55 yards.

North Tama blows out North Mahaska

TRAER — The North Tama football team’s posted four rushing and four passing touchdowns in the Redhawks’ win over North Mahaska.

Senior Skyler Staker was 9-for-10 and threw for 127 yards and three touchdowns while Gabe Kopriva accounted for four touchdown as he completed a touchdown pass from 2 yards out, ran for two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown.

Noah Weber led the team with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown. Deven McKinley and Staker each had a rushing touchdowns.

Luke Pennell led the team with 67 yards and a touchdown while Tayte Payne and Adam Greiner also had touchdown catches.

Staker also had an interception, a fumble recovery and 3.5 total tackles while Logan Raush led the team with 6.5 tackles. In total the Redhawk defense accounted for 12 total TFLs.

Mustangs edged out by E-B-F in opener

EDDYVILLE — The East Marshall football team’s fourth-quarter lead was shortlived as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont rallied past the Mustangs for a 24-20 win on Friday night.

The Mustangs (0-1) went on top 20-17 with six minutes remaining before E-B-F took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown. East Marshall’s final possession ended on an interception.

Samuel Bandstra ran for a team-high 59 yards, totaled 10 tackles and added a 22-yard interception return. Carson Burchland led the defense with 11 tackles.

Quarterback Logan Bowie completed one pass, but it was a 31-yard TD to Dane Thompson. He also rushed for 53 yards and a score. Eric Ommen had 50 yards rushing and Garrett Kerber had 48 yards and a TD.

Warriors outscored by Midland 47-22

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The Meskwaki football team started the season a 47-22 loss to Midland.

Senior quarterback Stanford Kapayou completed 11 of 31 passes for 206 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions.

Junior wide receiver Taurice Grant hauled in six catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Larnell Velaquez had six catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Defensivly, Grant led the team with nine total tackles with Sage Keahna recovering two fumbles.

GMG competes at Collins-Maxwell meet

GMG’s boys’ cross country team finished sixth out of seven teams at the Collins-Maxwell Invite on Thursday.

Junior Cameron Spurlin led GMG with a 10th-place finish with a time of 21:12.

West Marshall runs at Gilbert Invite

AMES — West Marshall’s boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Gilbert Invite on Thursday at the Iowa State University course. Both teams competed in the B races.

The West Marshall girls were led by freshman Emelia Hauser’s time of 20:39. Hauser’s 11th-place finish helped lead the Trojans to a third-place team finish out of 10 teams.

The Trojan boys’ team finished in 10th place. Sophomore Nicolas Thompson led the Trojans in 17th with a 17:52.

Mustang harriers fifth at IFA Invite

HAMPTON — Both the East Marshall boys and girls cross country teams finished in fifth place in the Iowa Falls-Alden Invite on Thursday.

Leading the girls’ team were Ellie Hull and Wendy Liera, who ran 23:02 and 23:36 to finish ninth and 15th place, respectively.

Joe Terrones led the boys team in 21st place with a time of 19:23.
