Iowa pulls Tigerhawk in honor of Hayden Fry
SAN DIEGO — The Univeristy of Iowa announced Monday that it will remove the Tigerhawk from its football helmets in honor of the late Hayden Fry when the Hawkeyes play USC in the Holiday Bowl on Friday night.
Fry was Iowa’s head football coach from 1979-1998. In his tenure, Fry won three Big Ten Conference championships, made 14 bowl games and introduced the Tigerhawk logo to the athletic department.
Fry passed away on Dec. 17 at the age of 90.
It will be the third time that both Tigerhawks will be removed from the helmet for a football game. The first was Nov. 2, 1991, after six lives were lost in a shooting on Iowa’s campus. The second was the 1996 Alamo Bowl when Iowa linebacker Mark Mitchell’s mother was killed in a car crash on the way to the game in San Antonio.
Despite being without the Tigerhawk, the helmet will include a decal honoring former UI Athletic Director Bump Elliott. Elliott, who hired Fry, served as Iowa’s director of athletics from 1970-91. He passed away on Dec. 7 at the age of 94.
No. 16 Iowa will face No. 22 Southern California on Friday in San Diego with kickoff set for 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised on FS1.
